1001 Albums: DiS - Day 17: Vulgar Display of Power by Pantera

Bit torn about this one - used to love it when I was in my teens, but Phil Anselmo is a racist white supremacist fuckhead. Not sure if even posting this was a good idea today?

My first Brixton Academy gig was Pantera in September 1994. Brilliant gig. Great album.

But Anselmo is an absolute arsehole. Haven’t heard the album or them in quite a few years.

Great album but not listened to it for a long time

Love this album (not as much as CFH which I absolutely adore, but about the same as FBD). But was put off by Phil after that white power incident and have stopped listening altogether since for the same reason.

Think Mouth For War and This Love are two of the greatest tracks of all time. Walk is a bit overrated for me but still a good’un.

To be honest looking at the tracklisting now I could probably leave the rest, some good moments and riffs here and there but no stand out tracks. So maybe I don’t like it as much as I thought. Used to be partial to Fucking Hostile though.

Great artwork.

Vulgar Display of Racist Bullshit

Edit: I saw Pantera once, years before the racist stuff became apparent. Anselmo was an absolute fucking prick, even then.

I never had any time for Anselmo but adore the run of CBF > VDP > FBD > GST. I think I’ve always struggled with separating the artist from the music when it came to Pantera so it’s not something that came to light in recent years.

Think VDB lags a little in the middle but finishes strongly again with By Demons Be Driven and Hollow.

was Dimebag a good lad?

cos Pantera are a reasonable band with a fucking incredible guitar sound

having never been big in to them, I can separate the arsehole frontman from the genius who actually made the band good

…who hopefully wasn’t a dickhead

I don’t really know, but I’m not in love with his guitar

aah

so reasonable to guess: not a very good person

shit band anyway, early Sepultura does it better

My gut with this is that it’s misguided rather than intentionally racist, but It’s obviously not good either way… Maybe it’s a bit of a product of its time, I think there was less controversy around the Confederate flag 20 years ago compared to now? I was still a kid then so could have that completely wrong.

Just always thought him and Vinnie Paul were good eggs next to Phil (and maybe Rex Brown is an alright fella, who knows?), but not got much to back that up.

Certainly knew kids 20 odd years ago who just thought the Confederate flag was just cool looking, they (and me for that matter) certainly didn’t know what it stood for.

I used to like this album when Walk was being played during the “metal section” at our local indie club (basically Walk, Refuse/Resist and Enter Sandman, every week). But like others, have had no desire to revisit it for many, many years.
