By sheer coincidence I had this on only yesterday! Fucking amazing isn’t it? It sounds like nothing that came before it, and a lot of stuff that came after it sounds suspiciously a lot like it…

Yes. Ah well, too late to edit now.

Ooooh! Great pick. I know it pretty well so no surprises, but I’m definitely in the mood for this today.

Ace, never heard it. Will try and check it out today.

Amazing album. Gonna give it a listen before voting, but most likely a 9 or 10.

Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time
For y’all have knocked her up
I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe
I was not offended
For I knew I had to rise above it all
Or drown in my own shit

Obviously a great album, but I don’t know why this is the one that cut through. There are other Funkadelic records that are just as good, if not better. Is it because long anguished guitar solos are closer to the expectations of white rock fans, or is it just a time and place thing? Anyway, what I’m saying is, if you like this, listen to Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On, which is the funkiest party you will ever go to

Athough I do like the funkier stuff from Funkadelic and Parliament that came in the later 70s, I don’t think you can beat the stuff that came out right at the start of the decade - Maggot Brain and Osmium (or Rhenium or whatever it’s called this week) are my favourites from Clinton and co.

This i reckon.

And i totally fall into that category when i first heard it when i was younger. Having never listened to them i just thought they wouldn’t be my bag and a silly funk band. Oh how i was wrong.

Actually, Standing on the Verge is just as good, isn’t it? Ok, anything pre-Mothership / P-Funk then

Love it, one of my go to summer albums. Glad to see it getting a lot of love here.

Eddie Hazel is the greatest. I could listen to the riff from Super Stupid for days.

Awesome! Just wish there were a few more tracks on it

Not for me.

I like the short, punchy, funky tracks - Can You Get to That, Hit It & Quit It and a couple of others. If it had been 10-12 tracks like that I would have liked it and then how engaging it would have been really depends on how it would flow. But I actively dislike the title track (so close to giving up tbh) and the longer jams like Wars of Armageddon. I mean marginally less annoying then late 60s style blues jam stuff but only just.

3 or 4.

First time listen to this album for me and wow - this is great!

Definitely going to have a few more spins of this but love the opening Maggot Brain and the closing funky wig-out closer Wars of Armageddon and Super Stupid but i think each track will open up more with each listen.

think you could argue any placement of their first six albums. which is why… if you’ve only heard maggot brain then you actually are contractually obligated to listen to them all by end of week.

the best song on the album

8 out of 10. It’s obviously objectively brilliant but it’s one of those records I’ve never quite connected with as much I think I ought to. I like it but I don’t listen to it much.

The guitar playing on it is amazing though.

Listened to it, brilliant in places but didnt get with as a whole. Maybe with time, very ahead of it’s time
