The '8s are always vintage years, right? 1968, 1978, 1988, doesn’t hold for 1998, but that’s the exception that proves the rule as 2008 was pretty great. Augurs well for 2018, then.

I think 1998 is an all-timer, especially for very focused sad albums. I don’t know what was going on that year, but it gave us:

  • The Smashing Pumpkins - Adore
  • The Eels - Electro-shock Blues
  • Elliot Smith - XO
  • Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider

And then on top of that: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, QOTSA’s debut, Pearl Jam’s Yield, Afghan Whigs’ 1965, the expanded version of GY!BE’s F♯ A♯ ∞, Pedro the Lion’s It’s Hard to Find a Friend, and a few more.

I stand corrected.

Arctic Monkeys not because it might be alright but, just to watch the music press lose their minds over them like they are the second coming again. The last memorable nme cover before they went free was this abomination:

eca73e49d0c9fb09dfb9d21d316007ee

Maybe this time they will dress em up as Jesus on the cross or as Galaxies.

Absolutely right (minus the Pumpkins for me)

and…

Boards of Canada - Music has the Right to Children
OutKast - Aquemini
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
Tortoise - TNT
Pulp - This is Harcore
Gang Starr - Moment of truth
Massive Attack - Mezzanine

If next year is half as good as 98, we’ll be lucky

Field Music.

Would also add here:

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Cat Power - Moon Pix
Beastie Boys - Intergalactic
Mercury Rev - Deserter’s Song
Hum - Downward Is Heavenward
Arab Strap - Philophobia
UNKLE - Psyence Fiction
Jurassic 5 - J5

And others. 1998 kicked ass.

I want a new LP and live shows over here by Nothing and Grimes before Trump starts a nuclear war and kills us all. I know Nothing are in the studio. Grimes is doing ‘something’.

I wrote ‘Intergalactic’, and not ‘Hello Nasty’. D’OH.

Now that I know they’re coming;

But Dream Wife’s January release will be one of the first ones I’ll be excited about.

Long Distance Calling - BOUNDLESS
In Vain - Currents

You’ve just reminded me, I think PSU are playing London? Must go see them if so.
