Beginning to think you’re actually Armond White

If you enjoy giant monsters fighting giant robots and Idris Elba chewing scenery then Pacific Rim is fucking fantastic. It’s an objectively bad film, but it looks spectacular, Ron Perlman is great value, and it basically delivers the brainless fun one might have expected from the turgid Transformers and Godzilla movies, with a Del Toro sheen. I fucking love it.

see the thing i found with Pacific Rim is how can Del Toro making giant robots fight giant monsters be bad? and yet it was so, so bad. like, sure, it looked good - but the acting, the fucking accents, the plotting - it was all so shit. not even in a ‘so bad it’s good’ way, which a Del Toro film shouldn’t be anyway. in a weird way I’m much more looking forward to the sequel, even if it does look like Power Rangers, because it just can’t be as bad as the first one.

It’s a weird one. Like, I can tell that it is a Not Good Film but something about it just shuts off my critical faculties. Really looking forward to the sequel though.

I’ll go to bat for The Devil’s Backbone. Never really liked Cronos all that much though. It’d be a contender for the ‘things you should like’ thread if I could be arsed to post it there.

I hope we can still be friends.

I really enjoyed Three Billboards in spite of everything so I guess we’ll call it even.
