MSMSWYD got quite lukewarm reviews but I found it enjoyable when I saw it. can’t remember too much, but I think the response came from the fact it’s Herzog and Lynch so people expected more. Definitely worth a watch though, did find it interesting

Both well worth seeing, especially Paprika on the big screen which would be quite a ride I imagine.

watched Coherence last night. i liked the way it dropped little clues along the way as to what was happening, it never became too confusing and was pretty satisfying. just read that it was mostly improvised which makes sense, the characters were pretty convincing on the whole though. definitely get the Primer comparisons. also, Xander!

Felt like more than the sum of its parts to me - in each moment i wouldnt necessarily be that blown away but by the end it all came together to form a satisfying experience.

yeah i’m quite fond of it but it is a bit flawed. it doesn’t really feel much like kafka does have a weird TV cheapness to it somehow, but still well worth a bash for a fan though.

Yesterday was Coco. Loved this, felt a little light to begin with but I was a blubbering wreck by the end. Loved the vibrant animation and thought it was a beautiful story. All the use of music was top notch and I really appreciated the decision to not use subtitles on the Spanish phrases and music.

Today was Early Man. I hadn’t picked up that this is a football film through and through so was a little surprised. You really can’t tell from the trailer for example:

Agree with what was said upthread about it being a little slight, not really a patch on stuff like the Wererabbit. Still stop motion of this pedigree is always a pleasure to watch. The football match was pulled off really well, I could have done with another match actually.

Would make a cracking double bill with Cave of Forgotten Dreams.

I saw this at the Edinburgh film festival a few years ago and properly enjoyed it. They showed it late night as well, so being kinda tired really enhanced the confusion the characters go through. Glad to see people enjoying it!

Watched Mistaken For Strangers last night. Thought it was pretty good, and enjoyed the relationship between the brothers and how the success of one affected it (or not), but there was an air of artifice over the whole thing that I couldn’t shake off. Felt like a lot more work and planning had gone into it than maybe we were led to believe.

Downsizing was really bad - agree with the posts in this thread, especially that Jonze/Kaufmann could’ve made it good. Was quite excited by the trailer but what a mess. Barely made use of what should’ve been a fun concept

they did say at the time that some of it is staged, because it’s a younger brother’s project as an aspiring filmmaker, I quite enjoyed that level of meta-ness

saw the Sleaford Mods documentary Bunch of Kunst (which is a fucking great title by the way) with a q&a from the director, turns out it’s a largely german production!

anyway it was really great, if you’re not seeing them live I’d say seeing this film is next best thing (so above their actual albums)

Yeah, I suppose I’m a few years away from the launch press and hype, so I missed that. There were scenes of Matt and Tom where I was just thinking “who’s filming this?”. I also saw there was one guy (not Tom) who was credited as “supervising editor” and “supervising [something else, not sure if it was director but a pretty important role anyway]” and I suspect he was more responsible for the finished thing than Tom (not least because Tom can’t even take a guest list to the box office)

Yeah, I went to the premiere back st London film festival in 2013 and Tom said he needed a lot of help to finish it because it almost half killed him conpleting it. Plus there’s a scene where he shows an earlier cut of the film and wasn’t happy with it right
