All the awards have different judges i think

Thank god they do though, free January entertainment every year

Dunkirk is really good for the first hour or so and then Nolan loses all confidence in the power of the story and ladles sentiment and schmaltz on like there’s no tomorrow. Turns what could have been an excellent film into something decidedly average.

The schmaltz was one of the best parts!

If by schmaltz you mean knitwear, I agree!

Didn’t look right, but the exemple suggests it was.

Not at all! First saw it when I was about 15 and it spurred me to read In Cold Blood and I’ve since watched it loads. It’s a really moody, atmospheric film - yes, it’s anchored by great performances (Keener and Clifton Collins Jr. are great too) - but there’s a lot else to recommend. I think Bennett Miller is a top director and it’s an unbelievable debut.

yeah i’d always assumed it was an established director, can’t believe it was his debut film - but it makes sense that he went on to make Moneyball and Foxcatcher, both of which are right up there in my favourite films

by the way, film fans, something I’ve found really useful recently is this website/app

tells you what’s been recently added on all streaming/online rental services (you can filter by what you have) - you can also search by title etc.

really useful for setting up a watchlist of stuff that’s on Netflix/Amazon for future reference - especially if you spot a title in these threads and want to cross reference it easily :+1:

As the road to the Academy Awards continues, here’s a handy guide summarising the inevitable backlash to some of this year’s major contenders.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - is racist/doesn’t solve racism (or something like that)
The Shape of Water - style over substance
Dunkirk - style over substance/whitewashing
The Florida Project - makes fun of poor people
I, Tonya - makes fun of poor people and domestic violence
The Post - corny
Call Me By Your Name - problematic relationship/swerves doing any gay sex scenes
Lady Bird - not sure this one had had a backlash yet, but it’ll be ‘white people problems’ when it does
Get Out - seemingly impervious to backlash, so we’ll call it the exception that proves the rule this year

Quite funny how 10 years ago Malick was this revered mysterious auteur where a new release was major news to his films now being quietly hurried out the cinemas back door

Watched a Greek film called Suntan at the weekend. Wasn’t as barking (no pun intended) as Dogtooth but did go rather intense in the third act. 7/10

I’ve seen some Get Out backlash around already. Mostly white people saying it’s overrated.

True, but it’s only official backlash when the Guardian does an opinion piece on said criticism. Maybe they already have with Get Out though.

Maybe everyone realised that ‘the tree of Life’ was total wank? Wonder what its cost to box office take figures were like.

Sad times as I enjoyed ‘the thin red line’.

My first film of 2018 was Listen to me Marlon, an ace doc on Marlon Brando who I had no idea was such a bad arse. More fool me.

The Tree of Life
Budget - $32 million
Box office - $54 million

I think The Tree of Life was one third great, one third wank that I nevertheless enjoyed and one third wank that was pretty lame. If nothing else, it gave Jessica Chastain her big break, so top marks for that.
