I thought these were just going to be monthly threads for people to discuss whatever films they want. Stop complicating things!

Interesting, I like Linklater a lot but had heard mixed things about this one. Might give it a go when it’s out end of January. And his next film is out in the US in May apparently (adaptation of a book I love, Where’d You Go, Bernadette)

Ah did it? I guess it must have popped up as a recommendation since I watched some other horror related stuff recently.

Yeah it was in cinemas for like a week

At times I can be a bit of a sucker for very steady, well-shot and well-written Oscar-bait type films. So maybe that’s the case here. (Lion was the same for me last year)

That, Three Billboards and I, Tonya would all have been in my top 10 last year, so it’s a great start to 2018.

Have you seen The Last Detail (which is great)? I heard that Last Flag Flying is a sort of unofficial sequel.

I’ve not, but I will! What a cast.

I usually stay on the sofa with a box of biscuits and watch a lot of films over New Year which involves trawling through the TV guide for anything I haven’t seen before, which will often be minor rom coms that didn’t really hit the cinema.

Recently saw New Year’s Eve, looked it up to see it got absolutely panned, 7% on Rotten Tomatoes and worst film of the year on several critics’ lists. It’s fine, a passable rom com like many others, and I’m sure it wasn’t the worst film of that year, probably wasn’t even the worst film I saw that day.

Checking on Letterboxd, there were plenty of other films released in 2011 that I personally rated lower than New Year’s Eve’s 5/10, including I Am Number Four, Hall Pass, Apollo 18, The Change Up, Fright Night, Immortals, yup there was some crap released that year and I’ve only been using the site since 2015. Fucking Green Lantern was released that year!

Finally stopped uhmming and ahhing and signed up to Limitless. First film will be Call Me By Your Name at the Odeon ‘Luxe Haymarket’ tomorrow night!

Ingrid Goes West was pretty dope. Good satire without being (too) cruel or judgmental of its characters, aspects of it felt very true and Aubrey Plaza absolutely nailed that performance. Also enjoyed the bonus Orange Juice tune that popped up, think this would have made my 2017 top 10 if I’d seen it earlier.

Still doubt a grown man could care that much about Batman but minor quibble.

Everyone knows the internet is only me and a bunch of dogs

The Shape of Water treads a fine line. I can see a lot of people loathing it. I really enjoyed it, very strange, beautifully realised and so creepy.

I watched it for the first time a few weeks ago. I’m actually the nerdy one with the guidebook who keeps his money strapped on him.

Princess Cyd - Got a lot of buzz at the festivals but went straight to iTunes in the UK - could not be more Sundance if it tried but was pretty sweet.

Watched the sacred deer thing last night. Liked it a lot, especially the soundtrack, but I was thrown a bit by the fact that we were just supposed to believe that this kid can just put curses on people without any sort of explanation as to how that’s possible. Also that the characters didn’t question this either. Perhaps I’m missing the point.

Arthur Fromer would be proud

Wonderful film
