I know they not that well regarded around these parts but they’re my favourite band of all time (I’m talking the Ts Smashing Pumpkins level obsession here) and I’ve got pretty high hopes for this. The fact that they’ve taken their time with it, scrapped a session with Brendan O’Brien to go work with a new producer, talk of a ‘musical redemption’ in the press blurb (read as “yes we agree our last two albums were shit but this one isn’t”) combined with the general state of the world (angry, political Pearl Jam = best Pearl Jam), makes me think this could end up being a real late career highlight.

Yep - seen it posted then taken down then posted again…

not listened to this yet but that is a very bad name for a song

I’d love it if this happened. I’ve not really enjoyed much Pearl Jam since Riot Act (so just the 18 years (?!?) then…) but I’d love a good PJ album about now. I’ll settle for a decent sized UK tour though.

EDIT: Actually Backspacer had a few decent songs I think? ‘Just Breathe’ is lovely at least.

Yeah Riot Act is the last of their Tier 1 albums for me too. Massively underrated, that one.

Each album they’ve released since then has been worse than the last.

Yeah, so much great stuff on Riot Act. Bit mellow for most I guess.

Kinda hope Vedder does a ‘Bushleaguer’ sequel for Trump and it’s just him sighing and saying, “for fuck’s sake…” for 5 minutes.

I forget if we’ve had this discussion before, but I remember their s/t album being very, very positively received when it came out (at least here in the US - how great it was was even the focal point of a random Doonesbury comic strip, strangely). I’m surprised by but also understand how much the general opinion on it has changed.

I didn’t know any of those details you mentioned so now I’m excited for the album too. Angry Eddie is the best.

My one concern is that his voice might not be fit for purpose for that kind of music in 2020. I think that’s why we’ve seen more and more of his acoustic, solo album fodder creep onto PJ records in recent years. Dunno if you caught the single they released a couple of years ago (‘Can’t Deny Me’) but it was their attempt at another screamer and it was fucking embarrassing. That was from the Brendon O’B session, I think, so I’m glad they finally cut bait on him…

Ugh, I had completely forgotten about that song. Yeah, hopefully this time they’re feeling a bit more inspired and avoid the lifeless mid-tempo thing.

Excited for this, last two albums have been fierce.

London show in October (!) on the tour dates at the end there, hopefully more to come.

She’s so fantastic. She posted that the current iteration of the live band has seven (!) singers.
