My top three of the year so far:

  1. Ichiko Aoba - Amuletum
Not only the most beautiful song I have heard so far in 2020, but the most beautiful I have heard for many years. AFAIK this is the first time sheā€™s ever released a studio recording with more than just her voice and acoustic guitar, but the addition of harp, clarinet and cello works absolute wonders.
  1. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Cars in Space
Iā€™m a real sucker for good jangle pop, and these guys scratch that itch for me far better than any other contemporary band. Love the way that the acoustic guitar acts as an anchor for those two intertwining lead guitars which can really let loose.
  1. tricot - å³č„³å·¦č„³
Excellent poppy math-rock by this all-female Japanese trio. Really tight track with brilliant performances. Iā€™m surprised they donā€™t really get talked about on here as Iā€™d expect them to appeal to a lot of DiS-ers.

Others:

Hailu Mergia - Abichu Nega Nega
Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela - Coconut Jam
Jeff Parker - Max Brown
Gezan - EXTACY
Horse Lords - Fanfare for Effective Freedom
Against All Logic - If Loving You Is Wrong
Moses Boyd - Shades of You

This is a great idea for a thread. Itā€™s so hard to rank these (with the exception of #1), but here are my picks from albums already released (Iā€™m avoiding singles for upcoming ones), assuming weā€™re doing a one track per artist rule:

  1. Caspian - Ishmael
  2. Holy Fawn - Blood Pact
  3. October Drift - Oh the Silence
  4. Dogleg - Prom Hell
  5. Post Louis - Fishwife
  6. The Men - Mercy
  7. Greg Dulli - The Tide
  8. Pearl Jam - Dance of the Clairvoyants
  9. Wolf Parade - Under Glass
  10. And You Will Know Us by the Trail of the Dead - Gravity

Just in case embedded links screw up the counting, hereā€™s a Spotify playlist.

Very honorable mention to anything off of the Empty Country album.

The Men - Mercy

Bit of a Friday afternoon update on this. There are now 201 tracks in the master playlist, which should be ordered.

There are 23 different tracks which people nominated their favourite song of the year so far.

29 tracks have been voted for by at least 2 people.

The track with the most separate votes is Baby by Four Tet.

The track with the most points is Iā€™m Not Your Dog by Baxter Dury.

I am going to leave this open until Sunday midday if anyone else wants to get involved. After that I will finalise the counting, provide a few more stats, and probably do a poll to decide how best to compile the top 25.
