this is fun

dolph quietly becoming one of my favourite guys at the minute.

Reasonable Drought was severely underrated by many.

I dunno, them and R.A.P. Ferreira are neck & neck. And Freddie had 2019 and, for me, 2020 too.

Admittedly took me a while to get into. Found his voice hard to get used to. It actually took the guest spots on the Westside Gunn to really appreciate it.

I sometimes find certain rappers voices hard to get into (Danny Brown, Gunn are just two that didn’t click straight away), but his clicked first time. I think Roc’s production definitely helped that.

Found Bob’s Son a nice enough listen, but a bit of a footnote compared to Purple Moonlight Pages, which I think might his best work so far.

I’ve definitely listened to more stuff from last year that would edge out some of those, but I can’t for the life of me remember what haha

EDIT: Armand Hammer, Damu The Fudgemunk (although could easily be in my jazz list too), Moor Mother/Billy Woods and the album that we were talking about in the first place, Reasonable Drought

Good list. I still play the Your Old Droog album a lot.

Hadn’t listened to this before - it’s very good, thanks for the tip!

Have struggled to find new hip hop for the last 5 years or so, so really appreciate this thread. It’s led me to recently get into Billy Woods/Armand Hammer, Pink Siifu, Conway the Machine, Denzel Curry, Benny the Butcher, Boldy James and Open Mike Eagle, so thanks all.

Haram, Bob’s Son and Death & the Magician all fantastic so far this year.

Living through such a good time in rap music.

I was bemoaning the lack of albums I liked this year compared to 2020, but totted them up and there have already been nearly 20 releases that I’ve liked. And it’s only April. There’s never been a period like that before (for me).

Wish I’d given Open Mike Eagles last album the time it deserved last year. Would have definitely made my AOTY list.

Anyone listened to the new Open Mike Eagle podcast with El-P? First episode was good, about how he got into music and the release of Funcrusher. Hopefully it’s chronological.

Just listened to this, very good. The next episode is out now and it appears to be chronological. I need to check out the first season with Prince Paul now.
