2023 Rolling Hip-Hop Thread

Posted about it in the new albums thread - but after the chat here about this generation not really going all in on albums - I’m as surprised as anyone to say Lil Yachty’s Let’s Start Here sounds exceptional on first listen. Super spaced out and trippy, clearly made with a lot of love, trying to make a Flower Boy type leap.

He might just have pulled it off…

I did the same when I first heard that track! Made me revisit his rap album, which I think is kind of a disappointment as I always love his guest verses, and also love Kenny Segal. Hope he does another project soon as I think he could make something excellent.

Just started listening to the lil Yachty album. First track sounds like it could’ve been picked straight off Yves Tumor’s last one.

Ah the singer from Kerosene, Diana Gordon, is on the album too.

On another forum I post on, we did Hip Hop Classic threads for a while. Would anyone else be interested in doing that on here? Every week/2 weeks a new thread is created for a classic album and we all discuss it/listen. Was a good way to chart put people onto older stuff that they weren’t aware of or never checked out properly. The average age was younger though, so maybe more successful in that aspect. But just having threads dedicated to classic albums could still be cool.

  • Yeah, go on then
  • Naaaaaaaaaah

we sort of tried that before, although maybe a new thread for each pick rather than one big rolling thread would make it easier for people to jump in and out, idk

I thought about doing something like that with particular rappers, but your idea is more manageable/focused

So, yes

Are they on discourse? Would be good to have something to fall back on en masse if DiS did go under at short notice!

Worth having a flick through these mixes…

Ego Trip’s Book of Rap Lists also has an excellent section at the back where they list all the essential singles and albums from 1979 up to the late 90s. Full list.

Here for this. Genuinely felt so refreshing/relieving hearing someone reaching a bit and not falling flat on their face after recent droughts. Gonna have to spend some time with it, but he took a risk, and there’s definitely good music here. Generally a bit of a sucker for shiny post-rap kind of projects like this, so will be on rotation for sure

Unfortunately not. It’s a forum that spun off from absolutepunk and is full of punk/emo kids who like Taylor Swift. A lot less varied and very American. Which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just painfully quiet until about 2pm haha. I barely post there much any more tbh.

say something already an early standout. very basic but its just ~vibez~

Was thinking the same thing and randomly signed up to a couple of hip-hop Discords to see what the craic was. Sadly most of them gave me early 2000s rap message boards vibes - bit of homophobic banter, channels to share porn in etc. Oh, and a bit of cryptocurrency chat.

Not really sure to be honest - been trying to keep abreast of things too but sounds like it’s becoming a bit of a financial burden/time suck for sean who runs it.

Yeah probably one of the more “typical” lil yachty songs on it

Yep - so much fun to be taken by the hand with such confidence and led on an unexpected adventure. Can’t remember when that happened last in any genre. And getting it from someone I’d dismissed feels joyous.
