Really don’t want to get into The Fall cause of what a horrible prick MES was but it is undeniably good stuff and up my street.

Not re-recorded but most of the tracks were re-mixed because they were using something called QSound which was a new thing at the time to give a three dimensional sound on a standard stereo system.

Slates is grate

(sorry, this is a bit obscure, but you made me think of ā€œFreight is greatā€ from Starlight Express)

as far as a triple drop goes today is insane, all at least a 9.

Slates probably the best mini-album ever released.

Cuban Linx possibly the second best Wu-world album? I think I have it above Liquid Swords.

Bartok slaps.

let’s dive into last week’s haul, eh:

We’re New Here – the original album is great but I think this just tops it (haven’t heard the Makaya McCraven version yet). ā€œMy Cloudā€ is superb, ā€œNY is Killing Meā€ is a banger, ā€œI’ll Take Care of Youā€ is the basis for the One Good Drake Song… wish Jamie XX would just keep remixing other people’s albums to be honest.

Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada – I’d have to say,

Tago Mago – I’ll just come out and say it: I don’t get Can. I’m a Can’t. I get that they’re hugely influential and the 18-minute freakouts must have seemed pretty radical at the time, but I just can’t get into this or any of the other albums of theirs that I’ve listened to. That said, I dug ā€œBring Me Coffee or Teaā€ and most of ā€œHalleluhwahā€, so there may still be a chance for them to earn their way into my good graces.

The Immaculate Collection – a staple of the young @drspaceman’s family home, serving up banger after banger – wouldn’t normally stick it on myself, but you’ll hear no argument against it from me!

Boy in da Corner – yeah this is great fun, runs out of steam a bit towards the end though. I had fun deliberately mishearing ā€œRascalā€ as ā€œRoscoeā€ and imagining it was a @manches -endorsed solo release.

Slates – enjoyed this, probably slightly more so than ā€œLive at the Witch Trialsā€; the sort-of title track is an absolute banger. Never occurred to me how Fall-y Bob Pollard’s songwriting is until now.

Bela Bartok: The String Quartets – have yet to really get into classical music, I’m saving it for when I’ve exhausted the other genres, as a little treat for later in life. This certainly seems like a GBOSQ though.

Slates on US Spotify has missing Leave the Capitol, some other missing bonus stuff, and two other tracks at the end.

I meant to include a screenshot but apparently was distracted. This is what US has:

My catch-up:

Slow Riot for Zero Kanada: This may not be Godspeed’s best work (Skinny Fists easily tops it for me) but it’s definitely their most accessible. What I love about Moya is that it still feels like a rock band. The way it speeds up with that beautiful ascending melody sequence around 8:30 has the raw energy of good hardcore punk. Reader, I danced in my kitchen to Godspeed, and loved it. Verdict: Visceral and pretty.

Dizzee Rascal- Boy in da Corner: I’ve given Dizzee many tries and I don’t think his sound is for me. Fix Up Look Sharp is great but the rest hasn’t clicked.

Gil-Scott Heron and Jamie xx- We’re New Here: This was gorgeous. I don’t know much about underground dubstep and garage and all the other styles Jamie was mining here, but there’s something colourful, danceable and alive to this music. Scott-Heron’s lyrics are woven in wonderfully. Verdict: Will come back to this.

The Fall- Slates: Yeah, pretty sweet. I usually find there’s only five or six tracks I generally dig from each Fall album anyway, so a mini-album is fine. I find the bass and drums have to be tight and punchy for this kind of music to work. Also, reading along to the lyrics, I never realised how interesting they are. However, is it me or are the Peel versions much punchier anyway? Verdict: 21 minutes of a a working man’s carpet soaked in stout and bile.

Raekwon- Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…: How have I not heard this before? I love Wu-Tang’s first album and have heard bits of Liquid Swords but this is my first real foray into Wu-Tang solo stuff. And this slaps. The production is on-point. It’s more wide screen and less grimy than 36 Chambers, and the wordplay and flow is tight throughout. 36 Chambers sounds like the cocky power grab, and this is how they keep the pretenders off the throne- tighter, more colourful, sharper. Verdict: Hell yeah.

First Joanna Newsom record of the list. Not one I’m familiar with.

Well, what better way to start than a triple album!

Actually, the first six tracks on Have One on Me are a pretty good starting point.

It’s DiS’s regular most favorite musician ever.
This is her worst record imho. Still great mind.

I’ll try to have a listen at lunch. I’ve tried with both The Milk Eyed Mender and Ys in the past, but I’ve not enjoyed her music as much as I feel like I should, based on the constituent ingredients. Seems like a very good egg though.

Yeah she’s never made a bad one, think it’s just personal preference really. I’d put this just below Ys as number two myself.

Might see if I can sneak it onto the turntable today if everyone else is out,I live in a very ā€œzero tolerance of, and appreciation for, J Newā€ household sadly.

Such an incredible album. I always treat it like an event to listen to it. Sit down on the couch and play the record, no distractions. Or on a long train journey. Feel like a different person by the time that fucking outro to Does Not Suffice hits. Nobody does it like her. The most one of a kind album I can think of.

It does help to have the lyrics at hand as well. Whilst I mostly love her melodies and arrangements, she does a lot of intricate poetry and storytelling she does. Baby Birch especially.

This is why I love the big beautiful lyric books that come with the vinyl records. Nice to read along with the music.

Although it’s a very long record I think it might be a good starting point if you’re on the fence/new/initially put off by the vocal style.

Her vocals are very distinctive and if they’re not for you then fair enough, but I think you’ll have an easier time of it here than Milk Eyed Mender.

Just remembered that she’s not on Spotify so I guess a lot of non believers will have a good reason not to try to convert today!
