Hahaha, just the thought of those 2 makes me queasy.
Agree with this I think. I love Shaun, even his crap impressions and constant jokes about Matt Everitt looking like a horse.
Iād love it if they gave the slot to Katie Pukrick. Doubt they will though, and she might not want it. I also doubt it will be Nemone, theyāve had countless opportunities to give her a regular prime slot over the years and not done so as I think they recognise that sheās quite bland.
If they give it to Katie Pukrick I will definitely stop listening to 6 music in the afternoons.
Heh! I love her but I can see why people might not.
Amy LamĆ©ās weekend show is really good, she might be a decent option. Another would be to move Marc Riley to the afternoon and give his evening show to Tom Ravenscroft. I think that would work well.
The worst option would be Nemone. She is so soporific.
As I said a little while ago Iāve only listened to Marc Riley a few times on his own - I definitely think he would be better with a partner to bounce off.
Time to reunite Mark and Lard perhaps?
Iām really not liking very many of the options mentioned on here so far. There are plenty on 6 music I donāt mind, but donāt really want to have on every afternoon while Iām working.
Maybe give Brian Cox and Matt Everitt a joint slot together and they can spent their afternoons slagging off Shaun. Itāll be like he never left.
Maybe they are just going to replace Shaun with an app. Shake to onions or for a cats in gangs. Try to get the farting seance before RSI sets in. Hours of fun for all the family.
Maybe SK will be replaced by the triumphant return of Zane Lowe to BBC radio.
Pretty much a like-for-like replacement.
These are both options Iād be in favour of. Tom Ravenscroft at 7pm on weekdays would be great.
I canāt listen to Radcliffe because Maconieās schtickās unbearable. Would much prefer Radcliffe on his own playing the music he loves rather than two or three hours of remembering things and crisps.
Canāt think of a duo to replace them. Riley and LamĆ© maybe?
Jamz Supernova has been a breath of fresh air at 6 - she would do really well in that slot.
Really hope not. Fine for a Saturday afternoon when Iām resigned not to listen anyway, or occasionally standing in for someone I canāt listen to anywayā¦ but hardly one of the big mainstream slots.
Pretty sure sheās good at what she does, but I think itās a fairly specific thing.
Sheās been great in MAHās morning slot in a way I didnāt expect - and the direction the station management seem to be pushing in seems very MAH-influenced (Jamz and Blessed Madonna getting regular slots, kicking out Kershaw at last).
Thereāll be Proper Music With Guitars types who think RadMac should move back, but I kind of feel itās going to go to a R1/XFM graduate (I donāt think Maconie, at least, would be happy about going back to a daily show). Huw Stephens seems like the obvious choice, but ehhhhh heās a Lamacq-in-waiting, that slot seems far more suited to him. Gemma Cairney is a safe pair of hands, but to the point of being unremittingly dull.
tl;dr, genuinely donāt know where this is going to go, but it will be about what the station management think 6Music is for.
Had a look at the comments on the 6music Facebook page and you are correct about the ārealā music crowd. People getting very wound up about dance music and hip hop being played.
Personally Iāve no problem with that being played, but I think in a way the BBC have boxed themselves in with each radio station having a certain genre, or time of music, which doesnāt always cross over easily without annoying the core audience. Just imagining the announcer on Radio 3 going āAnd now, Beethovenās 5th Symphony, followed by Common People by Pulpā. Thereād be letters to the Times.
Thereās some confusion here about what the point of 6music is meant to be. It was never set up to be a station to play indie guitar music. According to the BBC it is for āthe cutting edge music of today, the iconic and groundbreaking music of the past 40 years and unlimited access to the BBCās wonderful music archiveā.
Whatever you think about the vagueness of that statement, itās absolutely clear that it was never meant to be for a particular type or genre of music - it was meant instead for anything that was ācutting edgeā or āgroundbreakingā. It should be more varied than it is, not less. If people want an unthreatening indie guitar station they can listen to Radio X. A big part of the arguments that saved 6music from being shut down was precisely the fact that it wasnāt just a BBC version of Radio X and instead was doing something that commercial stations wouldnāt do.
As for your analogy, Radio 3 faces exactly the same abuse when it plays anything apart from the conventional western classical canon. People go crazy when it plays (as it does) modern classical, jazz, world music etc. Classic FM occupies the same place in relation to Radio 3 as something like Radio X does in relation to 6.
Pretty sure I would stop listening to 6Music if they just played guitar bands. How tedious would that be?
I distinctly remember hearing Midnight in a Perfect World by DJ Shadow. Must have been Radio 1. Odd day.
I donāt stick 6 music on all day but I feel like it has broadened up what it plays quite a lot, if I listen to anything outside the specialist shows itās Laverne and that it is a really eclectic listen. All Iāve wanted from them for years is the exit of Kershaw, her not being there is such a positive change. Not caught Jamz yet but I think Iāll put it on in a bit.
I know Adam and Joe canāt come back but that was so special, they tried other comedians in that slot and it never worked so well. Besides their original content I used to love hearing the songs A & J chose themselves and their thoughts on the playlist, basically Iād like two likeable funny people who are also huge music fans please for a once weekly show. No, I donāt know who theyād be. Daniel Kitson wouldnāt fit and heād never want to do it anyway but his occasional run of shows on Resonance are really brilliant, just him playing things heās interested in and waffling amusingly. Last Summer he did an entire run across August and threaded a narrative through the whole thing, it was some of the best radio Iāve ever heard.
The recent furore about Radio 3 slightly expanding itās range was pathetic. Iām a big fan of their late weeknight shows like Unclassified and Night Tracks, Hannah Peelās a regular host and it gets into some really interesting territory. I really liked Elizabeth Alkers Saturday breakfast show on 3 but it feels like thatās shied away from more outre choices since the last round of BBC bashing.
Always thought Benji B would be a good fit for 6Music.
And I say it loads, and donāt know who would host it, but find it strange that there isnāt a dedicated show for weird rap music. There isnāt anyone who caters for that aside from Tom Ravenscroft occasionally.
