Hmm we must have different definitions of “party” then

And yes you did just list the three songs I really like from the album, shame the rest is pretty guff. And SA wouldn’t make their top 10 songs come on now.

Yes, I go to good ones.

This is a ver weird opinion, how is it any better or worse than the rest of it? They have a sound and they are good at it.

Did I stutter?

Is it that weird to think “album has some songs that are better than others”?

normally, no, but I don’t understand it here

to be clear, I’m just finding the opinion that Sunbathing is so far down when it clearly isn’t, I’m not trying to convince you that it’s their best album or anything, I just don’t really understand how a fan of the band could think that one particular album is supposedly much worse than the other three “main” records when the whole point is how consistent they are.

I appreciate this is just a matter of opinion, but that’s why I’m encouraging/suggesting a re-listen.

I do largely agree that SA is the worst of the four but only in that it’s like 7-8/10 and the others are all at least a 9/10 for me

Other people say they’re so consistent, I guess I just don’t agree. SA emphasises all my least favourite parts of their sound while minimising my favourites - and it’s also their longest so it just feels like a drag. The others all have at least 5 stand-out tracks that I want to listen to at any given moment, compared to just 1 or 2 for SA.

could you explain what your favourite parts of PQ’s sound are and why that’s not present on SA? (Not being wide, genuinely interested)

as I say, they’re all equal for me, hence why I couldn’t possibly order them

I’ve read that A Savage’s focus on Sunbathing Animal was the lyrics first and foremost, and that really comes across to me. To me it quite often descends in to a bit of a rambly lecture with generic garage rock in the background.

I’d agree entirely with @lastdino here. To expand; it isn’t as catchy and hook-driven as the best parts of Light Up Gold, it doesn’t have much of the beautiful, restrained melodicism of Human Performance and it doesn’t have the variety of sounds and styles found on Wide Awake! Plus I don’t care much for the production, sounds pretty narrow and claustrophobic.

TL;DR Not enough melody, too much shouting.

For reference, my top 10 is vaguely

Borrowed Time
Human Performance
Stoned and Starving
Berlin Got Blurry
Tenderness
Total Football
Master of my Craft
You’ve Got Me Wonderin’ Now
Freebird II
Uncast Shadow of a Southern Myth (or Instant Disassembly)

I really like this verse from Mardi Gras Beads

It’s the images contained not the lens or frames
Recalled to my mind before I fall asleep
A list of regrets is no place to be
I’m coming in late but I’ll never modulate us
To a minor key

I fall into the same category as you guys. I should like them but so far don’t. I will check this new one out. I heard Total Football liked that.

For me Idles also fall into this category, tick all the boxes of something I should like but I don’t. I also wasted countless hours trying to convince myself that I like Titus Andronicus.

ALSO the only decent band in the 11 years my children have been on this earth to really “click” with both of them over three albums (Milano is one for obvious catchiness purposes, despite the non-kid-friendly lyrics blushes)

“Can we have the Unshakeable Nightmare song Daddy?”
“Can we have the dust song Daddy?”
“Can we have the Tulisa song Daddy?”

Dust would make a good motivational anthem to get them to do the cleaning up tbf

Wide Awake has that too no?

fair enough, I guess that’s a key difference then, I don’t mind the production or shoutyness (though Wide Awake also does this)

Really? I have no idea how to rank their albums, but for me it’s easily their best song and its existence pretty much invalidates all “best punk songs of all time” type lists. I always wish they’d do more stuff like that.

Aye Idles should be an entirely me band but found the vocals a bit annoying. Intend to give them another chance though.

I also tried with Titus Andronicus for a while as I found all the chat about them here and their album titles and stuff quite appealing, but eventually had to admit they sound a bit too close to Flogging Molly
