Hope you love it as much as I did. And don’t worry if you bounce off of it initially. Play it when you feel like it and don’t be surprised if you end up ditching it a few hours in, only for it to bug you waking thoughts and somehow draw you back in weeks or even years later.

Is this why we are banned from the gaming thread?

Quick question re the Switch version - what’s the deal with pausing and saving? I rarely get to play for long stretches / without interruption, so being able to put it down is kind of vital. I assume pressing the Home button pauses it like with any other game? And can you save whenever, or just at set points?

Oh my, no!

Dunno. Would think so.

You might have been given the rare pleasure of having a pause function with your Home button

From what I recall, if you’re online and put it into sleep mode for too long between plays, then it resets you to the last bonfire save. But if you play it in Airplane mode, you’re good to dip in and out as and when. I eventually left my Switch in the latter mode whilst I played it as I lost a lot of progress at least two or three times being online.

There is no pause button as such. If you are on a menu screen or sorting out your inventory you can still be attacked. However, if you do get interrupted by life, just save and quit. You’ll start back exactly where you left off with everything intact. (Unless they’ve changed it drastically for the Switch?)

My advice for the first few hours:

Don’t rush into fights
Your shield is as important as your sword
Watch your stamina gauge

Most importantly - If you are struggling, ask here before using a wiki - I’m sure everyone will give you a subtle nudge in the right direction without spoiling it for you.

So you can save whenever? That cad Epimer…

Awww, thanks!

Don’t worry if you bounce off it first. I HATED it when I first played it but read some stuff and had another go with a different build and it’s my fave game ever now

Unless it’s changed for switch? If you’re in the middle of a boss fight and quit you’ll spawn outside it and have to start the fight from scratch but that’s the only penalty. If there are no enemies immediately around you it’s usually safe enough to put the controller down and come back to without anything happening (if offline).

Cool. I’m not like asking for separate save files I can go back to or whatever, just that I can go to bed, or choose to play another game, without losing an hour’s efforts. Like, I’m playing FFVII at the moment so can only save on the overworld or at set points - it can be quite frustrating that I have to finish an area.

You can save where you are currently standing - but If you die it’s back to the last checkpoint, which might be hours of work if you forget to use one. There are no autosaves so you’ll be relying on the checkpoints a lot. Also if you quit out during boss fights you’ll lose progress so I wouldn’t start a fight if your train is near it’s station or you’ve finished pooping

Na, you’re grand. It’s not like jRPGs where there can be a 2 hour gap between saves. Even if you forget to save and the game kicks you out it should restart you where you left off.

I forgot how good O&S is even for vets. Still manage to cough up 20 odd deaths each time I face them

Jumped in just to give it a whirl - have made it out of the asylum. Only died the four or five times to the big blue demon twat before I realised you didn’t actually have to fight him with just a sword hilt… :joy:

Accidentally used up my starting gift though (the HP boost thing) by playing round with buttons, assumed it might come back but doesn’t seem to have. Is it worth starting again? What are people’s fave classes / gifts? Does it matter all that much?

Also - I really have no idea what’s going on. I guess I learned the buttons from the asylum, which I guess is like a tutorial, but I sat at the bonfire in Firelink and have no idea what the options are - hollow and so on. Are these things still going to be explained in game?

Also a bit confused about the online stuff - can other people appear in my game to fuck me up? Are some of the messages I see on the floor from other players?

And what does touching blood stains do?

That’s good going!

I’ll leave the uber-nerds to answer properly but in short.

Bloodstains show where other players have died. If you’re online they’re likely to be recent real players. They can indicate dangers ahead or suicidal leaps.

Lighting a bonfire means you save. Sitting at a bonfire heals you completely and refills your Estus flask but will see all normal enemies, but not bosses, respawn. So it’s a trade off. If you don’t save and rest though and end up dying, you could lose a lot of progress. You can also Kindle a bonfire which does something pretty cool…

If you’re online, players can invade your game but only when you reverse Hollowing (your current form) and turn Human. To do that, you need to consume some Humanity. Then you’re open to be invaded but also able to ask players to help you out. I barely ever went human personally and stored up tons of Humanity and Souls, which in hindsight was a waste. But I was never really sure what being Human did other than allow some bored bellend to invade and kick your ass when you least needed it.
