The game does a really bad job of explaining anything, which is absolutely part of the charm but frustrating to begin with. I ended up starting again after beating the second boss as felt like I’d fucked up my build already, but in hindsight wasn’t really necessary. You definitely don’t need to do it for the starting items, only one or two are really worth it and even then they absolutely aren’t essential.

To add to what @vamos said, there are two forms of humanity - hard and soft. Hard humanity sits in your inventory, and then when you consume it, it adds to your soft humanity which is the number in the top left of your screen. You lose soft humanity when you die (and get it back when you reach your bloodstain along with your lost souls), and then have to consume one to turn human again. So basically, keeping it in your inventory as hard humanity keeps it safe and consuming it puts it at risk.

Having more soft humanity has some small benefits - curse resistance, increased item pick-up - but probably not worth the risk of dying and losing it all. Really the most important thing is being able to turn human which takes 1 humanity. It’s a big risk/reward thing, as being human will allow you to summon help which can be invaluable for the tougher bosses, but also leaves you open to invaders. There are certain areas that are worse for invasions than others so just a case of getting a feel for it I reckon and whether you feel it’s worth the risk for that particular boss or area.

There are certain enemies you can farm to get humanity, but best way to get it quickly is to stick your summon sign down outside a boss and get summoned to other players to help them out. If you both beat the boss you get some humanity as a reward. Also helps you get a feel for the boss before you try it yourself with little risk, as you don’t lose anything if you die as a summon.

Humanity aside - the systems I didn’t understand at first were the stats and weapon/armour upgrades. Gonna spoiler each section in case you want to work it out yourself -

Re: stats, bottom line is if you screw up your build by investing in the wrong stats, you can always farm those souls back so it’s not the end of the world. But look at the weapons you ideally want to use and what stats they scale best from (these are the letters that each equipment has, stats with a high rating like A or S being the best for that weapon) or the minimum stat requirement for that weapon or spell.

For weapons, it’s really just down to what category (e.g. spear, axe, great axe, katana) you like using and the playstyle you enjoy, and then finding the weapon with the best stats within that category. Experimentation is encouraged early on before you get into upgrading weapons (more below) but it’s never too late to switch things up.

For armour, you need to think more about weight - the heavier you are the slower you move and slower you roll, but obviously the more defense you have. Your speed is based on what % of your overall weight allowance you go for, so less than 25% is a certain speed, less than 50% another, etc (think those are the right figures but might be remembering wrong). So it’s a toss up between being fast but more vulnerable or slow and a tank, just down to preference really.

Re: upgrading, you’re still a little way off from this so don’t worry yet, but upgrading your weapons is important and often more valuable than levelling up. Just something to bear in mind. (Also don’t upgrade your weapon to Raw, it’s a con!). You can upgrade armour too but I didn’t do this til the endgame when I had upgraded everything else and souls to splurge

Only other advice I’d give is don’t worry too much about dying - can be demoralising to lose loads of souls, especially after a boss if you’ve not reached a bonfire yet, but you can always get them back eventually!

And actually - if you’re ever really stuck on a boss, give one of us a shout and someone will definitely be up for jumping in and helping you out as a summon!

(Been a while since I played so big caveat on all the above that I might not be remembering correctly…)

absolutely not and this puts some people off. However I think this really is part of the charm of Dark Souls. Even when you’re not playing it you can be playing it… Sharing ideas and asking for information, exchanging thoughts on builds and ways to get around bosses… the whole thing really is a monument to co-operation and the fact that no matter what the game throws at you, you can cope with a friendly community to help you out.

TVDenims covered pretty much everything you need to know at the moment. All I would add in terms of your stats - don’t put points into all of them as you will spread yourself too thin. You should concentrate on levelling roughly 4 stats depending on the build you are going for. If in doubt, you’ll not go wrong putting points into Vitality and Endurance

Huh, well I’ll be. Didn’t know a huge amount of that!

Oh and avoid resistance altogether, it’s a junk stat. Your resistance will increase anyway as you level.

Spoiler!

I have the paperback, very good read.

I think most newbs get bogged down by the weapon variety, it’s important to just find one you like the moveset for and go from there. VIT and END are always worth the investment.

If an area seems too hard, come back another time. Once you hit Firelink Shrine you have about 3 paths, two of them will seem a lot harder than the other

Possibly daft question - my Estus flasks seem borked? They’re equipped to the down button of the “D-pad” on the Switch, but pressing it doesn’t make me drink them? It highlights them and makes a noise, but if I want to use them, I have to open the menu and do it. Left and right on the D-pad equip and unequip the shield and sword properly so not sure what the issue is.

I’m being an idiot, it’s Y to use an item in that slot. Slaps forehead

Pressing down on the D-pad on the switch will allow you to swap between the items you have assigned to your quick use slots in your inventory. Y will then activate the one you have highlighted in the bottom left hand corner.

Another hour or so tonight. Did a few suicide runs through the graveyard, got merked by the skeletons but picked up some nice weapons - only to find they’re too heavy for me to use. So I went upwards (think I saw something that said it was better than going down, at the beginning), into Undead Burg. Was having fun methodically hacking my way through the putzes up there, then saw a massive dragon like FUCK. Seemed to disappear so carried on, ended up getting fucked by some spear lads. Back to Firelink. Must be a bonfire up there somewhere…

Oh god I’m so jealous of you exploring all this for the first time! Good luck! :grinning:

The thing that it insane about Dark Souls over any other game I’ve ever played is my memory recall of it. I totally know where hyg is and the layout of that area. I know it’s because the game kills you so much that you end up doing it by repetitious learning on autopilot but no other game has stayed as vivid in my mind.

Yes exactly! The area where @hip_young_gunslinger is now is exactly the bit I know better than the town I’ve lived in all my adult life. It’s where I developed my analogy to racing games: I stopped seeing Dark Souls as an RPG and thought of it as a Forza or something - you have to take every corner (or baddie) perfectly otherwise you’ll never be out ahead by the end (next bonfire). It made sense to me at the time.

Might start either dark souls 3 or bloodborne again over the festive period. Never completed either but my switch dark souls journey was very enjoyable in a maddening way.

Spent a little bit of time grinding in Undead Burg, upped a few levels, bought some stuff off the creepy merchant. Started pushing on, made it up on the rampart, BOOM, fucking taurus demon! He killed me just as I climbed up to the snipers nest (cheers to whoever left the message). Heart is beating too fast to try again now, but looking forward to going back to him!

Couple of quick questions: Is there a stat for speed or anything that ups your movement / attack speed - or is that all based on weight of weapons / armour etc?

Also, do I need to roll into every barrel? Is there stuff hidden in there or is it just because smashing shit is fun?

  1. Speed is directly tied to how much weight you’re carrying. Below 25% will give you the fastest rolling. Levelling up endurance increases your capacity so indirectly controls speed. Some items also give a boost.

  2. It’s not always about what’s in the barrel but what might be behind it.
