I also find it hard to articulate, but isn’t it basically : does xG, which is worked out by 4 opta interns inputting all sorts of tedious data into a spreadsheet over 90 mins tell me *anything * more than one simple line from a journo saying eg ‘city were unlucky Imo’? I don’t think so

One of those data dickheads on twitter got mad at Alan Shearer for saying that someone “should’ve scored that” about a close-range header. He was like “well actually there’s only a 0.4 probability of someone scoring a header from that position so most chances of that type aren’t scored”. This apparently proves that Shearer was wrong to say he should’ve scored.

Obvious response to that is that the other 60% of players should’ve scored the headers they missed and they probably fucked it up.

Hate data dickheads.

Not sure I agree with this. One of my major irks is during the ‘analysis’ on MOTD any missed chance is described as one that he ‘had to score’. There’d be 10 goals every game if they all went in, at least the data guys are realistic (also really enjoyed the data lad schooling Glendenning on footers weekly a month or so back)

dunno i think most people are subject to biases when watching (their own) teams play and stuff like xG are good for eliminating that, agree that it’s more useful when applied over a whole season though and is generally far less revelatory than people are making out
