Hello again.
Been a minute. I scaled back Something In Construction and have been trying to write movies for the last few years. Turns out, screenwriting is HARD.
But I still get excited about new music and last year, one of my Top 5 (yes I still make lists) records was STOREFRONT CHURCH’s INK & OIL. I ordered it from the US and it was quite pricey.
He’s a fella from LA, who makes gigantic songs with strings and drama. Sorta Perfume Genius or Scott Walker or maybe Echo & The Bunnymen channeling Lana.
And I FCUKING LOVE IT.
I knew I was going to love it after exactly 12 seconds.
Everyone I played the record to loved it too and I was puzzled as to why it did not get more props.
Anyway back in April, I saw he was doing a free show at Lower Third in LDN and I went along. He was a great frontman. His dad was there, filming the show. I was also trying to film bits. And he kept getting in my way. Sigh. So it goes.
After the show we had a chat. Turns out, he’d self-released the album and not done a great job on it. But he’s been playing with or making tunes lately with Deafheaven, Caroline Polachek, DIIV, Phoebe Bridgers, Perfume Genius etc.
So it ain’t just me, I was thinking.
I met up with him a few days later and noticed he had songs on Dept Q and The Queens Gambit. And the penny dropped. Dayum, I thought. Your father is Scott Frank. Basically my screen writing hero. He made those shows and wrote Get Shorty and Out Of Sight BITD and is one of Hollywood’s highest paid screenwriters.
FFWD to now and I am managing him, even though I vowed not to manage any more groops ever again. We’ve set up a label and are re-releasing Ink & Oil in November.
You can hear it here
See if you like it too.
And if you do, he’s playing St Pancras Church on Nov 10
