Yep, on paper. Suspect we’re going to have a LOT of souls-like games over the next couple of years, each with its own combat innovations (much like there are lots of FPS games with variations on the same core mechanics), e.g. Nioh’s stances, skills, and ki or targeting body parts in The Surge. What this will emphasise is what Dark Souls (1) and Bloodborne, in particular, did so well, which is the sense of atmosphere, subtle environmental story-telling, and excellent NPCs. Nioh doesn’t really do any of those - it’s just a wonderful variation on those core mechanics. It sounds like The Surge has played it a bit safe on the atmosphere front. Definitely hoping some of you lot take the plunge, mind.
