Good luck man, I started off in C25K and am doing half marathons now

Nice one! :muscle:

in that stage where I completely fall in love with running atm. got a 5km and 10km PB this week, and getting mad endorphin hits. Think it’s to do with dropping a decent amount of wedge on new shoes and getting my gait analysed and that

How’s your gait mate? I run like an idiot is what they told me basically. Fuckin’ Jordan Henderson up in here.

pretty standard apparently, but I’ve got pretty high arches and really wide feet so it was quite hard to find a really good shoe for me, ended up with these https://www.sportsshoes.com/product/miz2371/mizuno-wave-rider-19-running-shoes-~-aw16/

Reckon you’ll be pure lightning in them mate

2 runs in and they’re working miracles, mate

i want some new shoes - something zippy - goig to try soem out in a week or so
EXCITED!

Up & running and sweatshop both have treadmills in store where they check your gait and that. If you take in the shoes you run in atm they can check the wear pattern on them as well

Also whoever decided sweatshop was a good name needs to take a long hard look at themselves

When I first started running I went to the Asics shop in Leeds to get running shoes and they did a gait analysis. They filmed me running with their basic trainers then put me in some shoes that are meant to help severe overpronation. There was a noticeable difference in how balanced I looked so I didn’t feel like I was being cheated out of the £100 or so that I paid for them. They have what looks like a massive platform on the instep to correct my idiot feet (I feel like Forrest Gump when he wears his magic shoes) but they have helped a lot.

I think of all the stuff you can buy when you’re starting running, an expensive pair of shoes is the only thing most worth spending loads of money on (and a really really good sports bra).

If that’s the case I would really recommend investing in one that straps your boobs up as closely as possible so there’s absolute minimum movement, after a couple of kilometres holding them to your chest will get pretty tedious and you’ll probably expend more energy that way (totally non-scientific guess there).

I’d say don’t spend less than about £30 on one. I’ve got a couple similar to this one from M&S: http://www.marksandspencer.com/extra-high-impact-underwired-serious-sports-bra-a-g/p/p22426653?image=SD_02_T33_6319_Y4_X_EC_90&color=BLACKMIX&prevPage=plp
They’re good because once they start slacking or you inevitably lose weight from all the running, you can make them into racerbacks which makes them tight again so they last a while.

A lot of people seem to swear by Shock Absorbers too, they’re about £40 for the ones made for running. Once my M&S ones have given up the ghost I’m going to buy one to try it out.

(btw sorry if this is all obvious and patronising and you’ve already got a good sports bra but hopefully it’s helpful)

There’s a (very readable) book called ‘Running Like A Girl’ which has some good recommendations and tips for buying sports bras for women just getting into running. I can’t remember the specific brands and shops that the author rates, but it’s worth a read anyway and is quite inspiring.

What?

I can’t remember the specifics, but if you do want to read it, don’t be put off by the title, which my girlfriend did find patronising.

And decent socks

Don’t really do a lot of running right now, but thinking of getting a pair of shoes for the times I do.

Is there anything I should be doing before looking or looking for in particular? I can’t really afford to spend much more than, say, £40 so if I went to get my gait etc assessed, would that still be useful for me?

Yep, I did the gait stuff and spent £30 on trainers.
Check online for vouchers etc

Also look for last year’s shoes. They’re usually available in sales.

I signed up months ago for a 10k in Leeds, it’s in two weeks but I haven’t been able to do any training because the physio told me to lay off the running for a while after he looked at my dodgy knees. I’d quite like to do it still but I don’t know if it’s a good idea or not and anyway there’s no way I’m getting anywhere near a PB now my fitness has slumped.

I went for a 5k today to see how things are going and it took me about 38 minutes (including a couple of minutes waiting at traffic lights) which makes me think I’ll make it round OK if I take it slow. Never in my life did I think I’d miss running but here we are
