got a question

so… if you are primarily chasing a fast 5k - how long would you guys aim to be making your long run each week?

I got below 20 mins doing intervals on the treadmill and still doing my 10km’s, so dunno.

Building some interval training into your week would help, I also did Park Runs every Saturday for a month or two which was good for keeping at a decent pace and have ‘competition’ to keep me pushing at that pace. Also getting familiar with the course, where other runners around my current and desired time were useful.

yeah i’ve got this 10k race in a couple of weeks - but then i’ll be focussing on just going FAST! - i’m thinking

1 5km run a week
1 interval session (at the moment i’m doing a kindof fast as possible 3km - but intervals will work better i think)
1 long run hill run (10 km - build up to 15km?)
1 to 2 swimming sessions a week
build in some core work into my strength exercises

YEAH?

There’s no science or anything behind my answer here, but probably 8-10 miles.

FWIW, my 5k PB is on a trail run off the back of 20-21 mile long runs - that probably says more about the fact I’ve not chased 5k PBs over the years though.

you are well fast so i’ll take that!

Got under 22 mins for the parkrun for the first time. Should’ve been quicker but I set off too fast and my legs went. Still take it though

definitely not, it’s still something you’re training for and takes a lot of effort (esp. when you’re training in rank weather), and it’s money for charity. win-win

It’s all relative. If you’ve trained really hard and had to really work on the commitment to do it, then it’s not unreasonable at all.

When people give money to someone to sponsor them, they’re not giving money for doing the event on the day; they’re giving money as a recognition of the months of effort, preparation and dedication that go into being able to get yourself on the start line in the first place.

Brighton 10k this coming Sunday. Are you ready @chris-budget ?

YES!

  • i am not expecting a great time due to

a - it’s going to rain and maybe be a bit windy
b - going to a friend’s birthday / engagement drinks the night before, so i’m not going to be very rested / a bit hungover

hoping to do it in under 50 mins - did a 10 track run a couple of weeks ago https://www.strava.com/activities/766493867 in 48 mins so, we will see

you ready? - i see you ave had a little break this week - i’ve been out for a couple of short runs so i should be fairly fresh legs wise

Yeah, I’m ready. I’ve been for a couple of runs this week, just haven’t uploaded them yet. I saw your track 10k. I commented that it looks like your GPS tracks better than mine does when I do track running but looking at that again it seems all over the place.

I think even being a bit hungover and tired you should be good for sub 50 but you’re right about the rain and wind, that is annoying.

I think I should be able to do sub 45, maybe in sub 43 again like I did in the Southend 10k but weather conditions may prevent that. I’ve been trying that MAF thing discussed upthread for about a month but I think it takes about three months before you start to see significant improvements. We’ll see.

i dream of sub 45!!!

BEST OF LUCK!

Good luck chaps, will be keeping an eye on Strava. Expect some kudos coming your way.

PRESSURE!!!

cheers dude!

*but only if @chris-budget gets sub-50 and @JohnM gets a sub-43.
