In November 2015, the BBC announced that it had commissioned a television adaptation of His Dark Materials, to be produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema.[58]

I’ll never know

No. They got canned based on the first one not making the big bucks. Apparently there was a whole load of essential stuff filmed and cut out by the studio because they were scared of upsetting the religious-right in America, but in doing so they ripped the heart out of the film at the same time. They also seemed to film it all with a yellow Instagram filter for no apparent reason as well.

There’s a BBC adaptation due in a year or two though - hopefully they do a better job of it.

I read it at the wrong age, obviously, but I don’t think I’d have been able to bond with someone who had such wealth and privilege had I been a tweenager.

Those kind of ‘lost prince/rightful king returns’ high-fantasy series were my least favourite of those I read at the kind of age Harry Potter is aimed at.

I ended up seeing the books as ‘Hermione does the work; Harry gets the praise’ over and over again.

The new Fantastic Beasts film/extended universe gets more into that stuff actually.

I read it aged 22 or something. My main recollection was being given the first three books and being told the first two weren’t great but the third was worth reading the first two for. Given they took a couple of hours to read I was okay with that and would certainly agree that the first two aren’t particularly engaging stories.

And yeah, HP isn’t a character you particularly get behind unless you’re a kid. I don’t really know about wealth? He doesn’t have wealth does he? Certainly he has privilege but it’s cool if you were ‘woke’ aged 7. I can obviously believe this of you. The rest of us normal humans would have bonded with Harry pretty easily. Dunno, let’s check how well the books sold to see if you’re more right than me?

The Hunger Games are a far better example of good storytelling and writing, but crucially are probably aimed at an audience 5-10 years older. In the case of Katniss she isn’t meant to be so ‘every day’ in the sense that she is actually amazing with a bow and arrow, so her ‘normal’ aspects are more about caring for her family.

Netflix should pull a Lemony Snicket on it’s ass.

Harry Potter is unimaginably rich - he inherited loads of money from his parents. It’s why he can afford all the best kit in the first film.

And then, later on, Sirius Black showers him with gifts too, because he’s got loads of money.

There’s a little bit in the books about how bad Harry feels when he sees the Weasley’s poverty, but that’s it.

This would be terrible, I’ve not read it but because I’ve made poor choices when it comes to friends I’ve heard a far bit about it. Sounded like horrendous fan fiction and pure drivel. Also includes a scenario where Hermoine says “Ethel. Cancel the goblins.”

If there were no sex ed classes HOW COME NONE OF THEM GOT PREGNANT

I was going to make this joke almost exactly the same way you’ve worded it but chose not to as it seemed too crude

So you’re saying you’re as awful as I am AND a coward?

There was once a really good argument on Wikipedia because someone had edited the page to say that Harry was a virgin, and they were arguing that was a notable fact about the character and should be on the page, while others argued that it wasn’t appropriate and wasn’t known for sure anyway.

It basically descended to someone saying something like “JK Rowling never writes that Harry’s just been for a shit either, but you’re not editing the page to say that.”
