My Mum has IBS which is severely triggered by gluten and oils (amongst other things). When we go anywhere out for dinner, she will always have plain fish, cooked only with butter. She would not have been happy with a pizza.

I do a lot of training with europeans and will ask anyone with a name I’ve not seen before how to pronounce it at the start of the session to avoid completely butchering it.

Had a Jan in my class yesterday and thought it was a nice easy one, turned out he was Catalan and it’s pronounced differently

I went for some time playing football at work without correcting people who thought my surname ended with an “m” rather than a “rn” cause they’d only seen it written down. And by some time I mean I never corrected them and have long since left.

pizza
piece 'a fish

I can see that.

Must admit I’ve never been to a gala event buffet and am eager to rectify this.

Pronunciation is an interesting one though as surely people from different places/dialects have a more difficult time with certain pronunciations than others. Outside of nationalists making a point of pride about it to intentionally highlight the differences, people shouldn’t need to pronounce things the same imo as long as the meaning is understood.

While we’re on name pronunciation, i can report that our IT team still think my name is Alexa

When I searched on my phone for the fish and chips photo i got nostalgic at all the dinners I ate there in the space of my 36 hour layover. I had to stick to indoor ones because it was monsoon season, but still.

Nobody expects perfection when pronouncing names from a different language/dialect but refusing to try, or being put out when corrected, is really rude and very brits at it again

Think people can like or not like anything they want to.

I am also in this very ‘no butter’ camp and have politely declined sandwiches for this very reason. I’d rather just say no thanks and not make a fuss but unfortunately, in this and many other similar situations, some people just demand to know why you don’t want something. I find this subset of people also tend to be the ones who roll their eyes and mutter when presented with food dislikes.

Also learning how to say things like food ordering in another language, making zero effort to pronounce it right, but still feel entitled to be understood perfectly on their holiday in that country.

Yes but it’s a thread of people posting their faces so what else can you imply if you are selective with liking people’s faces?

this has absolutely done me

It depends if it’s performatively done, I’m not going to affect the way Spanish or Italian people roll their rs to get the correct pronunciation for example

also I’m not going to correct European people who pronounce my name differently. Why would I need to hear other people say my name the same as my parents did?
