🌍 Afcon 2024

Thought it deserves it’s own thread. Love me some Afcon, random teams, decrepit stadia, improbable winners. And lots of dancing.

All I remember from the last tournament was a load of surprisingly drab low scoring games.

Disapponted Benin haven’t qualified (unless I missed them on the list)

One of the problems is it being 24 teams, so finishing third on 3 points will probably get you through. Not really a motivator to attack much. But then it’s also a really nice spread of teams where qualification isn’t guaranteed but lower ranked teams have a chance to get there.

just had a look at the last two Euros and last two AFCONs, which have all been 24 teams and in all of them, 4 points got you through and multiple teams got through on 3 points

so yeah I reckon it leads to a majority of teams knowing that keeping things tight, maybe nicking a win and you’ll probably be fine

be interesting to see if the same happens in the tournaments this year

he’s kicked a beauty!

Keeper should well have saved that.

England Right Backs XI vs Nigerian Strikers XI would be a fun exhibition game.

Confy League legend Gift Orban can’t even get in the squad.

Bad first half good second half

Much better atmosphere than this afternoon too. Maybe it’s just too hot for the locals to be interested in going to the 2pm kickoffs.

Last games of round one. Favourites Morocco playing Tanzania, who lost all their games last time they qualified in 2019. But I’ve seen some people be cautious about Morocco because they have a lot of European based players who have never played in sub Saharan Africa, whilst a large group of the Tanzania squad play for the same teams in their domestic league. They also have players from Wealdstone, Boreham Wood and Basford United.

Any notion that the Tanzanian players would be better equipped for the pitch through African Champions League experience disappeared pretty quickly last night. They were steaming in and losing their footing regularly, which is what happened for the sending off.

Two big name games today. Nigeria, Egypt and Ghana are all without a win in the first round of games.
