I reckon it’s going to be one of

Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
Arca - Arca
Moses Sumney - Aromanticism
Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up
Susanne Sundfor - Music for People in Trouble

It would easily be Mount Eerie…but I’ve got this nagging doubt about whether it should really be considered. It’s harrowing in a way that even either Carrie & Lowell or The Skeleton Tree aren’t.

Happy to be sidelined by something else though…only album that I’m still excited for is Destroyer…but I doubt that’ll be as good as Rubies or Kaputt.

I have no idea how any publication or person is going to be able to place Mount Eerie in a list with everything else at the end of the year. I kind of feel it needs its own special recognition separate from the ‘top 10 records of 2017!’ thing… “and at number 4, one place above Protomartyr and just below Open Mike Eagle it’s Mount Eerie with his album about how his wife died!” No.

Did try it when it came out. Not clicked yet. Will try again!

Open Mike Eagle is very good, thanks for the recommendation.

SZA is much better than I remembered it being. Will persevere with it. “I’ve been banging your homeboy on Valentine’s Day when you were in Vegas” does me every time

n.b no Mt Eerie, as mentioned above I just don’t feel comfortable rating him alongside the other releases in quite a flippant way.

p.s. A couple of things that aren’t out yet but I’ve included so that I can slot them in when they’re out (Converge and Julien Baker) as I’ll be astounded if they don’t make the ‘top 64’ cut. I’ve also left a bit of space for releases that might grab me by surprise (also to make it up to a round 64, which makes the tournament style play off much easier).

I really do have too much time on my hands now it’s half term!

No particular order

Party, great shout :+1:

Album sampler for Joose Keskitalo here. I think it’s a (weird) treasure.

yeah the Anna Wise record is great

Did you not think much of Mermaidens? Or did you not get the chance to give it a try?

I liked it a lot but it didn’t make my top 64 unfortunately, already feeling very conflicted about things I’ve left out…arrghhhh

My AOTY list is coming along. I have about 15 releases to review/evaluate, but if all goes well, it should be done in the next couple of weeks.

Sadly, no clear cut 5-star albums, …maybe 1 or 2 4.5 though, but I’m not sure if anything has or will be at this point viewed as good or better than either Fates Warning’s Theories of Flight or Cloud Cult’s The Seeker from last year.,

Soccer Mommy is pretty good, even though the band name is possibly one of the worst band names ever

I know you didn’t do this to have people go “what about xxxx” but I thought you’d be into the House and Land album particularly since you’ve got Julie Byrne on that list.

Not heard of it but will check it out! Thank you! Think I might need to incorporate a wild card feature into my system…

@scagden - yeah, so I did the work for you. I wouldn’t introduce a wild card feature for House and Land if I were you. And I really like Julie Byrne.

Saw Japandroids last night performing the new one and it pushed it to AOTY, so good.

This forum has reinforced firmly in me the notion that I need to listen to a lot more new music.
