Do people hate mystics? Prime lips

Wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan of the band but ‘Era Vulgaris’ by QOTSA is flippin’ ace, i prefer it to ‘Rated R’ and ‘SFTD’. I gather it’s not well liked by fans though.

yeah I’m the exact opposite, Era Vulgaris was where they lost me, loved Rated R & Songs for the Deaf, wasn’t massively enamoured with Lullabies but found this one really disappointing. Horses for courses.

I’ve gotten the sense most people consider it a mistake (with the exception of Pompeii) and that they temporarily went back to form with Embryonic. I love the whole thing though and think it contains some of their best material.

I don’t think he’s written a bad album (the latest one is the weakest, but still good). Era Vulgaris is really enjoyable, and has a top three QOTSA song candidate. I’m not sure why people hate it.

I got into it at the same time as Yoshimi as my introduction to them, and it all seemed one big wonderful thing. And then Embryonic blew my brains out and is still my favourite of theirs.

Lots of catchy tunes on this album. I enjoy NME’s (positive) review of it which says “All the songs sound pretty much the same, so there’s no point mentioning any individually”. But most of them remind me of summer and beer gardens so that’s good enough for me

Yeah, they were definitely one of my favorite bands to discover. Yoshimi blew me away, and then I worked backwards a bit until Mystics came out and loved that immediately too. I’m surprised The Terror isn’t more highly regarded, I thought about it for this thread but figured it was more of a case of people not having heard it rather than hating it.

Since 95% of responses to Mars Volta being mentioned are “they went shit after Deloused” or “they went shit after Frances”, I’m going to throw in The Bedlam in Goliath and Noctourniquet, both of which are classics and top three candidates for their respective years.

The Bedlam in Goliath is basically the musical equivalent of malfunctioning strobe lights and ray guns being placed your head. I can understand why people hate it (it is kind of oppressively noisy and overwhelming to the senses) but if you spend time with it, the details and twists in the songs reveal themselves and it becomes absolutely electrifying. I can’t think of any other album like it.

And Noctourniquet is also fantastic in a different way. There’s this weird contrast between sort of relaxed vocals / music and extremely busy drums, so it ends up being very disorienting. I think it’s generally viewed as a throwaway / “they ran out of steam” album, but while it doesn’t have the explosive insanity of their early work, the tight songwriting and creativity is there. It’s a solid A.

I forgot the most obvious answer. I’ve already written too much about it elsewhere, but trust me, The Future Embrace is fantastic.

It is really, really shit. I took it back to the shop twice

…or ‘The original version of Daughters - You Won’t Get What You Want’.

Weezer - Make Believe (The gig they played in Edinburgh to support it is still in my top 5 of all time. Made me appreciate the album much more.)

Manics - This Is My Truth… (Ahem… I actually hate everything else by them, but this came out at the moment I was starting to explore music on my own, rather than just listening to what friends/family played. Maudlin as fuck, so it hit the perfect note for a grumpy young teenager.)

Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee (Not hated, I guess, but folk seem to be really down on it. Top driving album.)

It’s a best of genre classic that had no chance due to the media and the artwork.

Rock n Roll is definitely my favourite Ryan Adams album.

definitely not a “can’t stand” sort of thing, but I love all of High Places’ stuff, and people seem to be quite cold to a lot of stuff after, say, the debut album

Lately I’ve been listening to ‘Dylan’ from 1973, which everyone apparently hated because it’s all covers. Really good though

I fucking love R.A.M

NO.

that’s the one his label threw together without any input from him when he temporarily left them for a couple of years, right? never actually listened to it.
