Albums of the Decade

Too soon? Ah well I’ve already thought of mine. Haven’t decided on the order yet.

David Bowie-Blackstar, The Next Day
Disclosure-Settle
Beach House-Teen Dream, Bloom, Depression Cherry
Sufjan Stevens-Carrie and Lovell
Tame Impala-Lonerism, Currents
Low-Double Negative
Metronomy-The English Riviera
The National-High Violet
Young Fathers-Cocoa Sugar
Arcade Fire-The Suburbs
A Tribe Called Quest-I Got it From Here
Mystery Jets-Serotonin
Chvrches-Every Open Eye
The 1975-A Brief Enquiry…
La Roux-Trouble In Paradise

‘Blackstar’ is a certain Number One. It’s more than just an album. A true work of art from a musician that knew his time on earth was up…

How are we organising this?

Low - Double Negative, Cloud - Comfort Songs and the first Winged Victory album.

I’ll cheat and include Meguri by Worlds End Girlfriend too

Only in very rough order, probably forgetting a lot and only allowing one per artist

Blackstar
To Pimp a Butterfly
The Skeleton Tree
Double Negative
Let England Shake
Carrie and Lowell
Divers
Summertime 06
Piñata
Modern Vampires of the City

Hard to judge anything from the last two years or so (apart from Double Negative)

Cant help but feel this is a bit premature when we’ve got a new Sugar Ray album at the end of this month tbh

Kanye West - MBDTF
Kendrick Lamar - GKMC
David Bowie - Blackstar
Nicolas Jaar - Space is Only Noise
Algiers - Underside of Power
John Hopkins - Immunity
BLONDES - BLONDES
Chromatics - Kill for Love
Andy Stott - Luxury Problems
Nick Cave - Push the Sky Away
Radiohead - AMSP (it’s better than you say it is)
Flying Lotus - Cosmogrammar
Holly Herndon - PROTO (late entry, but I genuinely love it)
Goat - World Music
Daniel Avery - Drone Logic

…plus…

Swans - The Seer (a difficult one, but it’s an album that meant a huge amount in terms of impact and the right time in life - it would be dishonest of me not to include it, even if it is now tainted - comfortable with the idea of it not being included in whatever amalgamation / end of decade tables though)

Probably Kanye or Kendrick for number 1 - less certain of the order afterwards, probably Daniel Avery next.

Yep it is a bit premature but I was having a little nostalgic look at the last decade and thought I’d put a little list together. I’ve forgotten to include a few already, Kanye for example. Only Weyes Blood really stands out for me from this year thus far…

Listening to PROTO right now - may be up there in the top three. Difficult to know with albums you’ve only just discovered, how you’re going to feel in a year’s time. I loved ISAM when it came out, but rarely listen now.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
High Violet
To Pimp A Butterfly
Perfume Genius - Learning
Hello Sadness - Los Campesinos
In Our Heads - Hot Chip
Arc - Everything Everything
Smother - Wild Beasts
Probably doesn’t count but Trilogy by The Weeknd

I’ll just list my favourite albums from each year

2010 Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
2011 Destroyer - Kaputt
2012 Jens Lekman - I Know what Love Isn’t
2013 Mark McGuire - Along the Way
2014 The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
2015 - Girl Band - Holding Hands with Jamie
2016 - Prins Thomas - Principe Del Norte
2017 The War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding
2018 Rival Consoles - Persona

Not a popular choice, but I absolutely love that Prins Thomas album, so will probably be my album of the decade (although the new Blanck Mass, Loscil and Girl Band albums will be monitored.

What do people think will make it to the top of most lists when they start to come out?

I reckon:
TPAB & Damn
MBDTF
Blackstar
Let England Shake
Carrie & Lowell
Channel Orange

Others?

Anything that maybe wasn’t ultra acclaimed the year it was released but is now more acclaimed?
