Albums (or songs) to be Buried With

Stealing an idea from podcast about movies (which @TKC has already done in the Entertainment forum).

You have died. You’re at the pearly gates of musical heaven but in order to get in, you have to tell the gatekeeper your answers to the following questions. You can choose a song if you can’t think of an album

What’s the first album you remember hearing?

What’s the scariest album?

What album made you cry the most?

What album is generally seen as awful but you love it anyway?

What album did you love when you were younger but you listened to it recently and realised it wasn’t any good?

What album means a lot to you, not because of its quality, but more for the associations it has with a special memory?

What’s the sexiest album?

What album makes you laugh the most?

What album do you find most relatable?

What is objectively the best album ever made? Not your favourite album, but the one you’d play to an alien who wanted to know what music was

What album could you listen to again and again and never get bored of?

If you’re allowed in to heaven, you can bring one album with you to play to all the other people up there when it’s your turn to DJ. What are you bringing?

The Larrikin Love one. It’s still good in my memory version of it.

What’s the first album you remember hearing?
The Cure - Disintegration, I think. Probably wasn’t actually the first album I heard but the tape was in my dad’s car a lot. There is a home video of me as a baby absolutely raving on the carpet to some old 90s dance music though, so it could well have been Orbital or something

What’s the scariest album?
Geogaddi by Boards of Canada captured my imagination in that way - the sheer darkness contained in that album, man.

What album made you cry the most?
I’m weird in that I don’t really physically cry, but Hospice by Antlers definitely HIT, specifically ‘Two’

What album is generally seen as awful but you love it anyway?
Can’t really think of anything I like that’s widely thought of as bad tbh. I seem to like Strangers to Ourselves by Modest Mouse a lot more than a lot of people though

What album did you love when you were younger but you listened to it recently and realised it wasn’t any good?
Can’t think of anything specific. I’d say some of the trip-hop stuff I got into as a teenager strikes me as really flat and empty these days though.

What album means a lot to you, not because of its quality, but more for the associations it has with a special memory?
This is tricky because usually the quality feels kind of inseparable from the special-ness, if that makes sense. ‘We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank’ by Modest Mouse and ‘Quaristice’ by Autechre s spring to mind as albums I associate more with really specific holidays than I do with the actual enjoyment of them though (even though I like both albums)

What’s the sexiest album?
f̶e̶e̶l̶ ̶f̶r̶e̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶h̶e̶c̶k̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶b̶a̶n̶d̶c̶a̶m̶p̶,̶ ̶m̶a̶d̶a̶m̶ all I can think of is that the line " I can wash away what seventeen cold showers couldn’t wash away" on ‘Actor’ by St Vincent makes me feel all funny

What album makes you laugh the most?
‘Madvillainy’!

What album do you find most relatable?
‘Actor’ by St. Vincent

What is objectively the best album ever made? Not your favourite album, but the one you’d play to an alien who wanted to know what music was
Might just be an absolute prick and say a recording of ‘4"33’ by John Cage. I’d look at the alien and go “aaaahhh, do you see?”

What album could you listen to again and again and never get bored of?
‘Lonesome Crowded West’ by Modest Mouse. Or maybe something by Yo La Tengo - one of those big sprawling albums where the style shifts loads, yet feels tonally consistent.

If you’re allowed in to heaven, you can bring one album with you to play to all the other people up there when it’s your turn to DJ. What are you bringing?
getting flashbacks to that anxiety when teachers said you could bring a CD in on the last day of term or whatever. For some reason, I feel like ‘Quique’ by Seefeel would be good heaven vibes

What’s the first album you remember hearing?
My parents didn’t really have music on in the house so the first musical memory I have was really liking George Harrison’s Got My Mind Set On You when it came on the radio. What’s the sexiest album?
Song: Handsome Boy Modelling School ft Cat Power - I’ve Been Thinking

What album makes you laugh the most?
Hard question as music doesn’t really go with humour very well, does it? Feels like cheating to steal @Gert’s answer so I’ll go Half Man Half Biscuit - Back In the DHSS

What album do you find most relatable?
Not sure what it would be these days but as an angsty teen it would have been In Utero

What is objectively the best album ever made? Not your favourite album, but the one you’d play to an alien who wanted to know what music was
Prince - Purple Rain. Dirty Mind is my favourite of his albums but I don’t think there’s really anything to change about Purple Rain.

What album could you listen to again and again and never get bored of?
Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime

If you’re allowed in to heaven, you can bring one album with you to play to all the other people up there when it’s your turn to DJ. What are you bringing?

What’s the first album you remember hearing?

The first album I listened to and engaged with as an album (rather than something my parents put on in the car) would be Be here Now by Oasis. Though when I was really young my mum had a record of the Planets by Holst that I used to love.

What’s the scariest album?

Cw - known abuser of women
