Wait until they get to the top 10 and slow it down to 1 entry a day

Future Nostalgia is just so meh to me, what’s the big deal with it? Not even listened to Disco, though, so…

NFM normally, but those first 8 tracks have really burrowed into me this year. It’s two things, they are the kind of things you’d normally hear everywhere so it’s that sort of ‘normality’ thing, and you can just feel that she’s really invested in it & she loves that kind of music, it’s not a pose. And they are really great songs. Genuinely really love it. Although the last two songs are absolute pish and ruin it a bit.

one of those albums that felt fairly high profile on release but has been largely forgotten about as the year goes on, it seems. i’d forgotten until about a week ago that she released a new album this year. i wasn’t that into it tbh so haven’t bothered going back to it.

I wish just ONE of these websites would introduce their list by telling us it was a strange year, but that new music has been a welcome escape.

That’s how Stereogum has introduced pretty much every one of its articles since spring - ‘You know there’s a PANDEMIC at the moment so…’

Do sympathise somewhat… It’s not like there’s anything else going on.

Really like the Quietus list for finding new stuff and happy to see Hey Colossus as their number 1. Wonder what sort of sales bounce a quietus number 1 gives them (guessing not very much).

They were a band that we always around and I’d seen live a few times but I’d never done a deep immersion in, but picked up the back catalogue during lockdown (helped by their stuff being pay what you like on Bandcamp) and they turned into my most listened to band this year. The early sludgy stuff is fantastic and fitted the lockdown mood perfectly. The new one is very good but not sure it’s going to make my top 5 of the year.

The book by the bassist is excellent as well.

Yves Tumor is like catnip to music journalists. His album was fine, but doesn’t exactly merit all the high placings in these lists.

Yeah, I read it during lockdown and really enjoyed it. Seriously doubt the Quietus’ approval will give them much of a sales bounce but you can’t say they wouldn’t deserve one given their dedication. The stories like travelling to Belgium from Somerset for a weekend for a couple of gigs to very few people before being back
in work on Monday morning made me feel tired reading it.

Salem?!?

Fair enough - it’s a pretty great record actually. They have put stuff from their own label top a couple of times in the past, haven’t they? I mean it makes sense that they release stuff they love and have formed proper relationships with those records, but it still feels a touch skeevy. As it stands their number 2 is one of my joint number 1s for the year so can’t complain too much.

No Joe Thompson from HC set up Wrong Speed records earlier this year. Bold move to set up a label mid-pandemic. Rocket put out their stuff for a while and Riot Season did a few before that.

It might be a bit nepotistic to put them on top as they’re very much a Quietus band but all these lists have a bit of politics to them and I’m more than happy to see some nice guys benefit from it. Tbf though I haven’t listened to the record to judge how good it is yet yet as I’ve been trying to set aside some time to listen when I’m not knee deep in spreadsheets. See also the new Aesop album.

Still haven’t read Sleevenotes - think I’ll add that to the Xmas list!

Do it, it is very mundane. But, the mundanity of it is what makes it brilliant. Also got a book free with it by one of Saint Etienne that wasn’t as good.
