If they’re anything like lidl (and they are), then they’ll be total cunts of a company, not pay you correctly, have you working all hours and just be generally awful.

I worked in a Booths when I was at 6th Form, definitely wouldn’t want to manage one.

I like going in when I’m at home and it’s literally the same folk as was there 12 years ago, except some of them have little Bluetooth headsets on.

I don’t go in just for that reason, but to stock up on their Feta, Red Pepper and Chilli dip and get my free coffee.

I’m not getting out of bed for £4k a month, fuck 'em.

Yeah our area manager at [chain of American-style restaurants] used to come in every few months, everyone would shit it, he’d have a chat with the managers and get free food which we had to make sure was perfect. Seemed like a nice job.

Our manager would prance around the shop, flying off the handle about everything, and he’d always say “What are you doing?! Top brass are due in. ANY. MINUTE!”

Top brass. Always amused me as they we’re inevitably really chill. Squeeze the brakes on a couple of bikes, test the volume on a car stereo, and off they went.

Well this was a few years ago now, basically a part time job while I was at college. They were really bad, the store manager would have a certain number of hours they could have in the store on a given day, and if they ran over they’d just pay you less (hours were noted in pencil on a chart on the wall, so if they had went over the allocated hours they’d just start changing what you’d worked, e.g. if I worked 6 hours on Monday night I could go in the next day and see it had been changed to 3, etc).

They also had regional managers drive round the corner on random nights every so often and do pat-down searches of staff as they left the store at night.

Loads of dodgy stuff about their treatment of pregnant female employees as well. I hope they have improved, but they were total bellends back then.

They pay that well because supermarket Area Manager gigs are fucking awful.

for me the money has always gone up as the pleasure of doing the job has, but if someone offered me £100k a year to go back to the job i hated the most i’d do, even if only for a few months

Problem is that 73k is actually not enough to compensate for the work, stress and hours they’d be expected to put up with

Also apparently you need to sign out of the EU working time directive to be an Area Manager…that can’t be good.

It’s an insane lifestyle. I remember hating our area manager when I worked in a bookshop. She seemed very proud of working a lot over the weekends and still being up at 10pm sending e-mails and organising stuff. Seemed constantly tired and like she’d snap if provoked even slightly. Also due to the nature of her job completely out of touch with what it was actually like working there, and universally despised amonst employees.

Funnily enough students bought pens and books because they needed to, much like people will shop at Aldi because they need food and like reasonable prices. Quite what her function was was a mystery to us all, I imagine it’s the same there.

Those high wages are designed to keep schmucks glued to the job because once in they’ll feel like theyre very unlikely to make that elsewhere and grind it out, but at what cost I asks ye

They are not allowed to do that: “your employer can ask you to opt out, but you can’t be sacked or treated unfairly for refusing to do so” and also “you can cancel your opt-out agreement whenever you want - even if it’s part of your employment contract”
