I’ve told this story on here before, but I have no better argument in favour of the phonetic alphabet than when I was taking down an elderly customer’s postcode and she said, after a brief pause in which she was clearly trying to think of a word, G for (blurred for racism) gollywog.
I also had a colleague who used to use both B for Bertie and G for Gertie. That’s not how phonetic alphabets work!
