AMA S2E4: ma0sm (REDUX)

I like it as a question, and it reminds me that people should pay people more compliments in general and take the time to make them meaningful.

Hi ma0sm!

Hope you are well today

Do you have one of those Youtube videos that you love for some reason and like to show people? Maybe it is something super silly, maybe nice and emotional, maybe just really cool.

Was this film in Priory Park in Southend?!

Hey Chebbles, I’m good thanks, feel recovered from Best Kept Secret already which is good.

Do you mean videos I’ve made or other people’s ones?

Ones I’ve been involved in the making of:

One that I like showing to people, probably something Adult Swimmy:

Yes!

I contacted the council to ask for permission and I got emails and letters in the post saying they were discussing it with the relevant teams, eventually saying they were going to charge us 200 GBP for the pleasure a week before. I only contacted them because the dance co-ordinator asked so that the dancers’s par*nts knew it was kosher, and now lost the clause for plausible deniability.

I ended up telling everyone that it had been approved and hoped for the best. No-one stopped us doing it and now I’ve left the country having gotten away with this crime.

Haha awesome. Apologies if revealing this means you’re now tracked down by the Southend Parks Dept

Any suggestions on embassies to live in when they try to extradite me?

some good almost examples of that itt

I might have misunderstood the resolution of your bumped thread yesterday, but one of these maybe?

So many questions, so little time

  • has World Cup fever hit Holland yet?
  • do you remember where you where when Oranje won the Euros?
  • will you decorate your house orange if Oranje get to the final?
  • will Holland win the World Cup?
  • I have just been notified that code orange has been called from 6 PM for Zeeland, Zuid-Holland and Noord-Brabant. Will you be safe?
  • has World Cup fever hit Holland yet?
Even if it had, I wouldn’t know. I have been asked about the cricket world cup a couple of times, but I’m guessing you’re not talking about that.

  • do you remember where you where when Oranje won the Euros?
Just Googled it, Saturday 25 June 1988, right? I was probably at home in Wales.

  • will you decorate your house orange if Oranje get to the final?
    I will not

  • will Holland win the World Cup?
    Yes

  • I have just been notified that code orange has been called from 6 PM for Zeeland, Zuid-Holland and Noord-Brabant. Will you be safe?
Is this true? I know there was some sort of alarm test yesterday which reminded me that the end of the world make be happening.

No

Incorrect. it was 6 August 2017

6 August 2017 I’d have been sleeping as it was late at night and I was living in Australia. That was back when I was running Bris Funny Fest and had a performance earlier that evening.

Thanks for the heads up on the code oranje, shouldn’t affect us too bad here, but will make sure I’ve got my waterproofs ready for the cycle just in case.

Hi @ma0sm!

How is your Dutch?

Have you found it necessary to learn Dutch to live in the Netherlands? Would being bad at languages (like, really bad) be a barrier to relocating there?

Niet goed. Though I have recently convinced my work to have it as official training, so we shall see. I want to learn (a) Because I like living here and (b) Because our current mindset is to aim for Dutch citizenship and renounce our UK ciizenship because of Brexit. Fingers crossed they allow dual citizenship though. I’m also not great at languages though, but am more interested in understanding than in speaking writing as that seems the most immediately useful.

This is a good question. Moreso than most countries where you don’t speak the first language, I think The Netherlands is the easiest, in particular in cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and Den Haag where the international communities are bigger. Once at a bar in Rotterdam, a British friend of mine ordered a drink in Dutch only to be told by the barmaid that she didn’t speak Dutch. To a certain extent you can live a good life here not speaking Dutch. The Netherlands are so small they seem to be very well setup for things to make life easier for expats. In a practical sense, it does mean that I sign legal documentation such as a housing contract that I don’t understand at all, but that was the same in the UK to an extent.

What I miss most are the things I don’t miss. There’s a huge part of culture and community here that I literally cannot participate in. It’s not like I’m bored and looking for things to do, but you feel you’re missing out on many things that you don’t even know you’re missing out on. To many people this isn’t a problem, but long term it is something which I think is healthy.
