I’m close to having overplayed it now at about 30+ listens, but now am enjoying listening to the preceding album Love.

Can’t stop listening to this. The sheen and vibes dragged me in and the depth of the lyric sheet and the songs and sound is making me want to play it endlessly. Absolutely love it.

Anyone else getting deerhunter vibes?

Not heard of these guys before.

Their stuff kind of reminds me a little bit of the Fine Young Cannibals

If this was on a bigger label/had a bigger push I could see him doing really well. It’s a great record.

It doesn’t sound too dissimilar to Fading Frontier

Sacred bones has some fairly big acts. Think Henny Hval is with them.

I love Jenny Hval but she is not a big act. The biggest acts on the Sacred Bones roster still only play small-medium size venues.

If Amen Dunes had the kind of cash behind him someone like The War on Drugs has I bet the album would have taken off more.

Some of those queasy guitar lines have got that sort of ring to them.

It’ll do well by word of mouth I reckon. Is he good live?

That’s a good comparison actually.

Brilliant observation - had never noticed that. Might explain why I like it so much.

Listened to this a couple times last night. They’re really well written songs and he’s a great vocalist but I’m surprised at the hype due to the overall sound. The first proper song sounds like Primal Scream (or one of those Bands that support Temples) and a few of them sound like mid-period Arcade Fire (think it was Skipping School) in particular.

100% this. Sounds like an old man’s attempt to make a Screamadelica track. Another track (Time I think?) sounds like substandard impression of Django Django’s Waveforms. Really surprised by the hype around this.

Has anyone mentioned that the album before this one, Love, is the better one? If not then I just have. And it is.

Skipping School is better than pretty much anything AF have put out in the past decade. But yes, does definitely have a similar vibe.

For me, I liked the sound, his voice, and that was enough for me to give it a few more plays, each time one song jumped out until I was in love with the whole album. Just a massive grower and I’m convinced it’s one of those that busy people will cast off quickly but ultimately will be a cult classic.

Also bit confused by the ‘all the hype’ talk. Actually seems like it’s not really received the attention it deserved - especially on these forums. I think, had it appeared pre-conde nast PF would have given it a 9.2 +, but it doesn’t really fit with what they’re promoting these days. It’s certainly much better than most of the records that did get that kind of mark back in the day!

Hadn’t thought about the Arcade Fire comparisons but, yeah, Skipping School is a little reminiscent, it’s also one of the best tracks on there.
Have to confess I’d never heard his stuff before, to my recollection, but then based on comments on here (and the fact that a track was on Ought’s pre gig PA playlist at Brudenell) I gave the album a go.
Like it, he’s playing Leeds on Tuesday and it’s only a tenner on Dice, worth a pop ?

Certainly. Was going to go but I’m at Gomez in MCR.

Poor guy :frowning: (TW: sexual abuse)

Here’s hoping the success he’s had this year helps him continue to move forward. Great artist.
