I’m very conflicted by this
Like it’s good lots of good parts, but is just undermined by how stupid lots of it is, and I think the stupidity is pretty unforgivable given the films ambitions with its themes and how easily some of those stupid bits could have been avoided if they had spent a little bit more time on writing a coherent plot

Was hovering over reply with my BIG OPINIONS on the Coens, but then sensibly thought that they will almost certainly feature in a future one of these threads so am holding fire. That said, I note that I have changed my opinions a bit since this thread

^DiS on brand…

To be clear I was thinking Lebowski is probably their biggest popular film I guess, the one most people know of with huge love from audiences all over. It always ranks very highly in lists.

And, as stated, I think you have see their output mostly as two distinct streams, one comic and one serious.

(I note your list in that link has 1st and 3rd as two of their earliest films, right?)

Yup, but then also one of their earliest films second last - don’t think there’s any particular pattern there :woman_shrugging:

Will be sharpening my list making pencil in advance of the future thread no mistake…

Really wanted to love Prometheus. What a cast, what a universe to dive back into.

But it just seemed incoherent and that ultimately made it a massive let down, despite the stuff in it that worked.

For me that kind of thing is more easily forgiven if a film is ‘fun’. Like Rise of Skywalker is a similar chaotic mess in many ways but it’s good fun so horses on a star destroyer is just ‘fuck yeah’.

Promotheus is certainly better than any nolan film, that’s for sure

some great films and some terrible. kind of a journeyman, kind of a hack… a 3 overall

Classic Ridley had no idea what he was advertising, he claims.

Just watched one of those annoying ‘everything wrong with x film in x minutes’ things about Prometheus on YouTube, and it’s team under me of quite how stupid the film is

Has made me a bit angry all over again!

chill out, line-manager

Obvious 5/5 for Alien on its own, and for Thelma & Louise. Actually never seen Gladiator, and only saw Blade Runner in uni actually, need to do something about that.

Overall I gave him a 3/5 though based on what I know from his filmography

Hahahhaha let’s do Bergman then

Did T&L originate/popularise the “massively OTT number of police cars” trope? Obviously plenty of films had 5 cars chasing down one person or similar, but in terms of the finale having something like 30 cars hunting them down to the cliff, wasn’t sure if anything before it had pushed it quite so far

The blues brothers did it 1st
