Find him to be quite sterile, dull and pompous really.
Maybe that’s why alien and blade runner are good, they fit his natural vibe.

Hated gladiator - so boring, goes on forever, should have set it in space / the future

Makes me wanna revise my Nolan score upwards

from what I’ve seen

Alien - stuff of legend. Amazing. Best film
Blade Runner - this is good too
Thelma and Louise - hey I like this!
Gladiator - too long but not sure why this is getting so much hate. There’s tigers and swords and all sorts of cool shit in this one
Prometheus - guess what? I don’t hate this
Hannibal - yeah this is bad
The Martian - fine.
Alien Covenant - hahahahaha

I’ve seen both (Why? I don’t know why) and while the director’s cut is better, it still doesn’t make it a good film.

That said, Ridley Scott’s director’s cuts often do actually bring qualities other than just ā€˜adding back all the footage that got cut to make the film viable at the cinema’ - he will go back and cut transitions and shots that he feels inversely affect the pacing in addition to putting stuff in, plus fix bits of post-production that were rushed or bodged. His director’s cuts of Blade Runner all improve on each other.

He went through a period of seemingly making one good film followed by one bad film. Latterly, he doesn’t seem to be able to maintain this ration sadly. That said, I’m going to rate these guys based on the films that I’m going to revisit rather than their dross which I’m never going to watch again, so it’s a 5 from me…

Also I actually quite like Prometheus - it’s proper stupid and frustrating but it looks amazing!!!

He is really good at making stuff look awesome
That should be his job really, in charge of what it all looks like but hands off the pacing, and directing the people and the plots and that stuff

I reckon aliens is better than alien as well

:grinning:

I like Prometheus even though it makes little sense. It’s pretty and sounds nice.
I saw a YouTube video about how Covenant is actually good now so I need to rewatch that

Also - I have only seen about 5 of his films! :grinning:

That does shock me. I had fun with The Counselor.

He will always get respect for ā€˜Alien’ and ā€˜Blade Runner’, however, he just makes too many films doesn’t he? Especially in the last 20 years. His films always look great and are technically brilliant, however, the films themselves don’t really stick in the memory.

If anyone has seen ā€˜A Good Year’ they will know that Ridley Scott should stay away from romantic comedies. it looks nice though…as do all his films.

Has he not got a reputation for bringing in films on time and under budget? Studios probably love him.

ā€œA safe pair of handsā€ innit.

To be fair, I’ve just looked it up and Kingdom of Heaven doubled its budget… Good grief.

We should totally do one of these threads on Tony Scott.

I would rather watch Prometheus again then Blade Runner

How come?

Seen Blade Runner twice and just find it really dull and meandering. One of the ultimate style over substance films for me.

Saw Prometheus at the cinema and thought it was fine. Can’t remember it too much but because I’ve only ever seen the first Alien and none of the other sequels, I took it at face value rather than how it fits into the whole series and as a sci fi action film on the big screen it passed the time

Personally Blade Runner is something I’d call a ā€œgreat filmā€ whereas Prometheus is something I refer to as ā€œa film I haven’t seenā€
