And That's All From Amorim: January Football Thread

Cobham pickpockets right now:

The fatal flaw in a model where you go for younger, lower profile, less experienced coaches and managers because their demands are lesser is that either a) those players and coaches have that lesser profile and demands because they’re shit or b) they’re quickly emboldened by even modest success and outgrow their leash. I don’t know if Maresca is a poor head coach, or just one still early enough in his career to have not figured out what principles are and aren’t actually worth sticking to and will eventually get there (or get a job somewhere high-powered enough for it to matter less), but he clearly his job at Chelsea had become untenable.

There will be no internal reflection on why another appointment has gone to shit within 18 months, or why two very different coaches gradually lost patience with the club’s MO.

Rosenior has been given resources well beyond what most Ligue 1 clubs are given and has benefited from Chelsea client journalists talking him up. I don’t watch Strausbourg, maybe they really are very well coached (4 points from their last 6 games, though), but I’d not rely on anything written about him.

He’s 100% going to be involved in a deal, though. Chelsea sent their U21 coach (himself appointed only a year earlier) to Strausbourg as assistant last summer, transparently planning for succession. Either Rosenior turns up for an ill-fated 9 months at Chelsea, or BlueCo tangle him at Palace or Bournemouth or someone like that as a replacement.

I hope this puts the kibosh on him showing up at the Etihad this summer. I don’t think I could cope with our next manager being a photocopied version of Guardiola in every regard.

so you know I excitedly posted about Riazor being expanded and hosting games at the 2030 CUM?

well, during the announcement, the city claimed that a lot of the work would be financed through a mystery investor(s), and that the ground (owned by the city) would host concerts and other events in addition to football after the works were completed. at the same time, Depor have been fighting the council over this, claiming (rightly) that the stadium doesn’t need more seats, that the club would be responsible for increased maintenance costs due to the expansion, and that having the stadium host non-footballing events would be detrimental to the club.

that mystery investor that the mayor cited in the announcement last year? turns out it was Depor’s owners, ABANCA

I was actually more referring to the very impressive job he did at Hull

for the haters and without a shadow of a doubt, the losers - Galicia BovineFest is considered by all parties to be untouchable and will go ahead as scheduled after every home game at the Cow Yard.

Maybe a little amusingly, both Maresca’s (Ben Jacobs) and the club’s (Jacob Steinberg) stooges are pushing the briefing that he spoke to City in October and December, each party I guess thinking this makes them look good. I’ve no doubt it’s true, Maresca dropped his representation for Jorge Mendes and I’d assume Viana keeps tabs on everyone who has been through City Group. But surely, surely, he’d be well down the list?

Man Utd have recalled Toby Collier, be like a new signing

Whoever gets it is doomed so might as well burn it on someone who can be hired and fired with minimal fuss. There’s also the probability of Pep changing his mind several times so you don’t want to ruin relationships with an elite manager by stringing them along.

Be like a new signing when he recovers then.

It’s complicated by the fact that who knows if Pep is actually serious about leaving. He’s done the ā€˜definitely my last season’ whisper to the press three or four times now over the past five years.

Anyone who’s claiming to know how a small group of extremely wealthy and out-of-touch people are going to act is trying to sell you something at the end of the day. My favourite example of this type of bullshit remains Brendan Rodgers’ agent linking him to the City job on the basis that ā€˜he can speak Spanish’.

We’re signing a new, much needed striker! Woooo!

He’s called Pablo and has scored 18 career goals, all in the notoriously high quality Portuguese league. Boooo!

Add him to the list

We’re also signing Adama Traore!

Should at least be funny.
