I’d genuinely consider the Smiths to be Britain’s greatest ever band, so legacywise he’s left a mark which many won’t.
Think the way he was treated afterwards was a bit shoddy. Some of the stuff around the court case was quite nasty, and someone shouldn’t really have to fight for a fair living.

Really underated bass player imo - I mean, I think everyone knows how good he was and how great those bass lines are, but feel like he gets forgotten about and overlooked for Marr and whatshisface in most convos about The Smiths

Aw, shit. As well as his obvious, incredible work in The Smiths, he used to pop up DJing at random night in Manchester when I was a student (and would, obviously, always play Panic). Don’t think I appreciated what a privilege that was at the time. RIP.

Crazy to think that Morrissey and Marr thought his contributions were only worth 10% of the band’s royalties.

He was trying to beat a heroin addiction as well when he settled out of court for 10% of future royalties and >£100k, which seems opportunistic on the part of the others in the extreme. I can see why it might be less than 25% if other band members wrote the lyrics and most of the music, but rather than the specifics of the monetary side, having your former band mates and apparent friends stand up in court and describe you as effectively a session musician must have been difficult to swallow both as an artist and on a personal level. Not nice.
