Andy Rourke RIP

Yeah the bass on those Smiths albums is incredible, and 59 is a tragic age to go. RIP

ā€œSometimes one of the most radical things you can do is to speak clearly. When someone dies, out come the usual blandishments … as if their death is there to be used. I’m not prepared to do this with Andy. I just hope … wherever Andy has gone … that he’s OK. He will never die as long as his music is heard. He didn’t ever know his own power, and nothing that he played had been played by someone else. His distinction was so terrific and unconventional and he proved it could be done. He was also very, very funny and very happy, and post-Smiths, he kept a steady identity - never any manufactured moves. I suppose, at the end of it all, we hope to feel that we were valued. Andy need not worry about that.ā€

22 years old when The Smiths played their final show. Unbelievable.

Nice to read something penned by him that doesn’t completely fill me with disgust

and surprisingly down to earth

Will never cease to amaze me how a person can be capable of holding such depth of feeling, empathy and eloquence right alongside an equal measure of moronic, hateful bile.

There’s a massive sleight at Marr in there, right…?

Oh the manufactured moves? Possibly, didn’t notice it first read.

Thats what I thought too. Couldn’t be nice, just for once

Feels a bit brass neck from a man who withheld the tangible monetary value of Andy Rourke’s work from him for so many years, and argued against his artistic value in court to say that.

And then he goes and does exactly that - using his statement to not so subtly have a go at Marr.

To be fair, Marr did exactly the same.

I seem to recall the judge being even more withering about Marr’s conduct and character than he was about Morrissey’s, which is saying something.

I cannot physically click ā€œlikeā€ on words from Morrissey now, but those are actually nice words.

True. Morrissey has spent the years since complaining about how they robbed him blind tho. Seems like Marr made amends.

Really good interview with Mike Joyce today about Andy. From 1hr:43mins in.
