just listened to a couple of her songs after never listening to her before
not sure what to think. I mean, her voice is brilliant, and her guitar is great too. clearly carrying serious Joni Mitchell
but one song - the love one I heard - was really nice, and the other - a political - is making me cringe a bit
any thoughts?
I haven’t heard all that much but veering between brilliant and cringe seems to be the deal. She made a fantastic Persephone on the original Hadestown album (Anais Mitchell) though.
A lot of her stuff isn’t for me but this is one of the great breakup songs.
Just quiet, everyday heartache.
You are a china shop
And i am a bull
You are really good food
And i am full

I always get her mixed up with Aimee Mann - that’s my contribution to the thread.
Definitely a balance between brilliant and (at least somewhat self-aware) cringe. Probably an inevitable number of duds that come from having such a huge discography, but also some really phenomenal writing at her best.
Also just insanely prolific at the start of her career, with over a dozen albums released in the 90s, sometimes two per year. Little Plastic Castle is the only album I’m really excited for start to finish, but she’s also released over two dozen live recording and for me that’s where she really shines.
Almost none of them are on streaming, but this a couple of my favourites from bandcamp:
