Heard so many great artists for the first time listening to her Radio 1 Sunday night show in the 80s.
Thanks Annie.
R.I.P
this. Always a great soundtrack to doing my homework at the last minute. RIP
Oh that’s really super sad.
Her show introduced me to Steve Miller and “Macho City”. Fond memories of her playing this every four months or so.
Sad - she was always so cool. Read her autobiography a solid 20 years ago or so and remember thinking back then that her longevity was impressive. Some ripping yarns in there…

Very sad, she was a huge part of my getting into dance music when I was younger and was often an incredible champion for weird and underground stuff. RIP.
aw
I never really listened to her shows when I listened to Radio 1 (she played breakbeat, and the shows were in the very small hours), but I always appreciated what a living legend she was
This was at a time when I pretty much exclusively listened to breakbeat, DJed breakbeat, went to breakbeat nights, etc. She was a legend in the scene for everything she did to champion it.
I wish I’d given it a go, but I couldn’t stay awake
iirc she was on after the Breezeblock? might be misremembering tho
Legend, really sad news.
That sounds about right! Mary Anne Hobbs followed by Annie Nightingale…we were living through a golden age…
Very sad. I think she did a request show in the early 90s that I got something read played on. I missed it, but people at college said they heard my name.
Loved her. Sunday night on Radio One immediately after the Top 40… ‘Hi’
Wonderful.
RIP Annie
Yep, that’s the one I was thinking of.
Yes, this track she brought home to a lot of people I figure. It’s easy to have a preconception about The Steve Miller Band. Macho City is such a unique track and Annie Nightingale was such a unique soul. I remember her playing it (Macho City) when I was a child and being completely mesmerised by it, that breakdown in it, the vibe. As she played it, Sunday evening became Sunday night as it went dark outside during the duration of the track. I will always remember that.
I waited months, with a flat tape recorder ready to record it. She eventually played it again, and like you say, she played it about every 4 months. I looked for the record in Virgin Records before it became a MegaStore and found an import copy around £9, which was impossibly expensive for the early 1980’s and I’ve never owned it, because of this it’s like a mystical track, and kind of makes it even better.
I remember her saying after playing it once, “the rain”, and that’s all she needed to say. she wasn’t a DJ that came across like a lot do, with an I know more about music than you vibe.
What did come across the airwaves was her passion for music, so unmistakeable, she loved music, and that is infectious, and touches you. Similarly I remember her talking about Christina - Is That All There Is, and nothing but total love for the song came through. So much so, when she played the track I kind of fell in love with it, how brazen, stark, funny and dark the song is.
Saddened. A pioneer, for sure…
