not sure what to say. On one level, I’m probably quite above average in an academic sense (and even then, that’s not a general thing: I think I was pretty straight-through-the-middle average at school) and then there’s loads of pretty normal stuff where I’m pretty clueless.

I can’t hold my own in a discussion cause I’m pretty doofy, generally

My wife, and a few friends, are always very kind in saying that they think I’m pretty smart…and I don’t just disagree with them through modesty. I think education covers up for a lot (I went to a selective school) and, in addition to that, I think I have an “intellectualist” personality (it came up once on a free internet personality test and I’ve stuck with it - might make a thread about this). My interpretation of that is that I like thinking about things…and prefer to focus on abstract concepts rather than practical issues…but it doesn’t mean I am particularly intelligent…it just comes over that way, I guess.

Yeah can agree with your post, people think i’m intelligent but I really think it’s more of an intellectual curiosity that I have rather than actual proper intelligence. I think that accounts for how I’ve gotten really into music and sci fi, when these things don’t actually help me achieve anything

Yeah, I kind of took it as it we were talking about the more everyday use of the word hate here

Yeah that is what I mean

I’m absolutely thick as fuck

I’d say I’m ‘clever’ in that if I really want something so much, if I really put my mind to it I can usually find a way of making whatever I want happen. But sometimes I need more time to go over stuff when learning new things, so I’m worried I might be a bit ‘slow’ in that sense. If someone’s instructing me on how to use a gadget or something (by speaking to me), I find it hard to take all of it in and I always end up asking too many questions just to be sure, so I probably seem a bit dim. I’m not a verbal learner at all, I’m definitely more of a visual learner and I prefer to learn stuff on my own, take everything in at my own pace so that I get a full understanding. But people have also said I’m a quick learner so idk. It’s just ‘getting’ things first time round, but once I get it I’m fine.

I’m definitely a fool though and I spend far far too much time doing unproductive stuff which doesn’t benefit me at all.

Do the DiS boards have an official motto?

I think people generally rate their intelligence a lot higher than it is. I’d imagine middle class men in particular do this.

I agree. I also think I’m cleverer than most people.

the whole conversation has reminded me of how, after my dissertation, I used the fact that I’d written a dissertation about Gravity’s Rainbow as a confidence boost. For example, if I failed my driving test, I’d say “I just need to take more lessons; people who haven’t written a dissertation about Gravity’s Rainbow can drive; so I definitely can!”

yeah i get this. my sister in law was commenting on how impressive it is that my room is full of a shitload of books including some fairly heavy authors. i had to point out that i haven’t read half of them and i’m not really sure that i understood the ones i have.

I think one thing that’s happened to me is that I don’t think I’m a person that people so immediately interpret as being clever, and I end up having to prove to the surprised masses that I’m not a complete idiot

Yeah I’m a bit surprised that many DiSers are that sure of themselves tbh. Fucking hell

I could’ve even get through Gravity’s Rainbow once, so I definitely feel very dim now

IQ: Above average
General knowledge: Above average
Street smarts: Below average
Education: Average
Common sense; Below average

So many different ways to measure it.

I only use cubicles, if there is one.

I have a fucked up undiagnosed urinal disorder which I’ve had for years and probably urgently needs to be sorted out.
