This. My old band did a european support tour for another more well known band a few years ago, 2 of the arena shows in Germany and Italy took 20% from all merch sales, we either had to accept using their vendor or not sell any merch at all. In reality we had to increase the price of our T-shirts and records or face making a huge loss from the run of shows. I guess for headline bands using their own selling methods at gigs its different, I probably wouldn’t increase the price at all.

hello merchkitty

Chelsea Wolfe earlier this year was the first time that I have seen a payment card option.
On the subject of multibuy deals, liima had a tshirt and their new album for €20 if bought together for their recent grizzly bear support gigs.

I must be going to some fairly corporate gigs as I would say that most merch stands I see have a card payment option these days…

Very true! I always get extra cash out for merch, but there’s nothing good on offer i end up blowing it on beers.

I imagine it’s due to venues taking commission on sales in bigger venues. They tend to take like 10 - 25% as a fee or like a flat fee of £50 or something. Plus theres the cost of paying someone to sell it for you and the hassle of hauling it around with you on tour.

Saw Mogwai a couple of weeks ago and there was absolutely no merchandise on sale. indie points aplenty.
