Is there a general Tolkien thread, other than the LOTR memes one?
I rewatched the trilogy over the Christmas break, for the first time since I was maybe 15. I was a big Tolkien nut as a kid, reread the books obsessively, saw the Fellowship in the cinema six times, collected and (badly) painted the Middle-earth Warhammer stuff. Then a couple decades passed with not thinking about that world at all. Now I’m toying with getting back into Tolkein. I’m off work at the moment and have started listening to the Lord of the Rings audiobook read by Andy Serkis. Cracking me up how important weed is from the very outset - had totally forgotten Merry goes on to be some kind of weed historian.
Please use this thread to discuss Tolkien (critique allowed), The Lord of the Rings, Middle-earth, and whether I should buy the elaborate Rivendell Lego set.

Re-read the LOTR books last year and got loads out of them. Really happy to get involved in discussion about them. Great bunch of books.

Wonder if the animated/unfinished LotR film is streamable anywhere. Some of that is great…maybe not. Haven’t seen it in years.
The BBC radio version of LOTR from the 80s or 90s is kind of the perfect adaptation for me. Listened to it a lot as a very small kid and I can really tell in retrospect how much it informed my own imagination and interests

I think I read The Hobbit when I was way too young - like 7 or 8 or something
I remember loving it at the time but obviously never retained a single detail in my memory aside from the Stone Giants … who I thought were way too smoll in the Peter Jackson movie. In my memory and imagination they were the size of entire mountains
Always found CS Lewis more engaging and memorable (if a little pious & racial stereotype-adjacent) Looking forward to somebody please making a decent version of The Magician’s Nephew. I know there’s one in the works. I hope they don’t ruin it
Also, I hope I haven’t ruined the Tolkien thread by talking about CS Lewis

Ooooh this was my new year goal but it’s been usurped by shit loads of other reading. Hope I can get to this soon. Plan is to let Serkis get me through the swampy bits up to Rivendell and then book it from there.
Yes definitely. My mum was gonna get us this as a combined wedding/Christmas/birthday present, but then Her Indoors started remonstrating about it when we were at my mum’s and she had the website open, because my mum started saying it looks like a pointless waste of money and Her Indoors is easily led when people shame her for being childish. Back to square one in my quest for Rivendell.

Really frustrated with the Hobbit films to this day. Adapting that book is a genuine no brainer and it’s vibe is fucking beautiful and distinct from LotR

I take it back
And join your ‘fuck that guy’ train
That’s not too young for the Hobbit - it’s a kid’s book!
The rest of the books are probably best read first when you’re about 13-15, imho.
