I haven’t. They are playing Leeds in May and I’m considering going just for the experience, I went to see Sunn O))) a few years ago even though I’m not a great fan just to experience the sonic assault and it was incredible, although I did get bored after about an hour!

I think The Jesus and Mary Chain are potentially one of those bands. I really like Just Like Honey (which I first heard through Lost in Translation, probably my favourite film)… I’d say it’s one of my favourite songs, but nothing else they’ve done sounds anywhere near as good to me (from what I’ve heard), that I can’t get into them.

Yeah, I’m the same with Grizzly Bear. Gave Veckatimest some time when it came out but wasn’t into it. Think I was watching Coachella stream and watched them because nothing else was on, this was around the time of Shields and was mesmerised. Pretty sure they ended with 2 Weeks / Half Gate / Sun in Your Eyes and that was me hooked. Got Shields and worked my way back. Shields is definitely Top 10 for the decade for me.

Definitely music which is intended to be experienced live. I’ve been the last three or four times and while I certainly don’t dislike the recent albums, I find them pretty inessential companion pieces to the performance.

@Olivarez @LastAstronaut Agree. Though I came to Swans through the Swans Are Dead live album and Soundtracks For The Blind. This meant I was pretty primed for the comeback and really liked Our Father (and the two gigs I saw), but I quickly left The Seer by the wayside and cba with anything since. That said, would still be very keen to see one of their upcoming dates to experience the live thing again - even if today’s thing isn’t much like the SaD stuff.

The Seer was the first one I heard and I really got into it immediately but I’m into that sort of overly long music thing. I wasn’t always though, so there you go.

So am I, I have no problem with tracks breaking the 20 or even 30 minute mark. Godspeed, Wolves in the Throne Room, Yndi Halda etc etc. I might just have to accept that I’m never going to love all of their stuff and just enjoy the bits I do.

I think I should try and get a ticket for their live show in May though as I believe they are one of those bands I should try and see live at least once.

Yeah, I mean I’m not saying I stopped listening to his stuff, I just ceased being really into what they were doing, etc.

Like you, I was not aware of this situation either and the serious allegations against Michael Gira. I was very tempted by the Roundhouse gig next month, to experience the sonic assault and also to see Thurston Moore who is supporting. However, Googling it and reading the other thread have tainted my perspective on Gira and potentially how I enjoy his music. Without wanting to sound too glib, it has been interesting to read everyone’s perspectives.

0-10 listens: interesting but kind of weird and impenetrable except Soon
10-20 listens: aah…I see it…and not just Soon
20-30 listens: the whole album is great
30+ listens: this is my favourite album of all time

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
0-10 listens: this is kind of pretentious, self-absorbed and difficult to grasp but intriguing
10-20 listens: Oh right…yes…
20-30 listens: In darkened room quietly sobbing
30+ listens: this is amongst my favourite 20 albums of all time

It also took me a while to get Coltrane, Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman until my ear was attuned in…now love most of their discographies that I know

i always kind of liked the yellow house stuff, but wasnt completely sold on them until i saw their letterman 2 weeks performance. obsessed since then

With things like Loveless, I think it helps if you have decent headphones, or a very decent stereo setup at least. I found you need to absorb the sounds, and subtleties in some ways. I would say the same for things like the XX debut (and others really).

Neurosis. I heard them quite early on, but found it easier to get into all the bands they inspired and then go back to their discog. With Swans, I had to try albums from all over their catalogue before they clicked. I started with Children of God, which I found insanely challenging. Then I heard The Great Annihilator and was hooked. Have been in love ever since. Also Autechre. Still not 100% sold on the later stuff, but the earlier stuff is amazing.

Haha… not at all. I would second that…really headphone listening…in fact I can barely recall a time in recent years listening to it any other way…maybe cos my kids would object probably…they just don’t get it yet!

latest one is FKA twigs. Did not get the hype when LP1 was released but I have sort of gone back to it slowly and this year I’ve become obsessed with it. Probably my most played album of the year so far.

I was just listening to Misery is a Butterfly and thinking the exact same thing. I haven’t given Barrigán or their new one a chance though.
