Like you, I was not aware of this situation either and the serious allegations against Michael Gira. I was very tempted by the Roundhouse gig next month, to experience the sonic assault and also to see Thurston Moore who is supporting. However, Googling it and reading the other thread have tainted my perspective on Gira and potentially how I enjoy his music. Without wanting to sound too glib, it has been interesting to read everyone’s perspectives.

0-10 listens: interesting but kind of weird and impenetrable except Soon
10-20 listens: aah…I see it…and not just Soon
20-30 listens: the whole album is great
30+ listens: this is my favourite album of all time

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
0-10 listens: this is kind of pretentious, self-absorbed and difficult to grasp but intriguing
10-20 listens: Oh right…yes…
20-30 listens: In darkened room quietly sobbing
30+ listens: this is amongst my favourite 20 albums of all time

It also took me a while to get Coltrane, Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman until my ear was attuned in…now love most of their discographies that I know

With things like Loveless, I think it helps if you have decent headphones, or a very decent stereo setup at least. I found you need to absorb the sounds, and subtleties in some ways. I would say the same for things like the XX debut (and others really).

Neurosis. I heard them quite early on, but found it easier to get into all the bands they inspired and then go back to their discog. With Swans, I had to try albums from all over their catalogue before they clicked. I started with Children of God, which I found insanely challenging. Then I heard The Great Annihilator and was hooked. Have been in love ever since. Also Autechre. Still not 100% sold on the later stuff, but the earlier stuff is amazing.

Haha… not at all. I would second that…really headphone listening…in fact I can barely recall a time in recent years listening to it any other way…maybe cos my kids would object probably…they just don’t get it yet!

latest one is FKA twigs. Did not get the hype when LP1 was released but I have sort of gone back to it slowly and this year I’ve become obsessed with it. Probably my most played album of the year so far.

I was just listening to Misery is a Butterfly and thinking the exact same thing. I haven’t given Barrigán or their new one a chance though.

He’s an incredibly talented bassist. Dark steering was the first I heard him, but it comes through a lot in a lot of his music.

It never helps when there is an amount of hype about a record. I’ve listened to things at the time and been nonplussed. But gone back a while later and finally warmed to them…and ended up loving a lot of records.

I think some of my favourites come about by doing this. Not necessarily hype records but an album will come out and i’ll give it a listen and not be too bothered about it and then something spurs me to listen again months or years later and I get heavy obsessed.

Exactly. The last time this happened it was Grimes. When Visions came out I was like ‘whatever’ (there was a lot of hype) but I gave it a second chance a little while later, and loved her ever since.

Yeah, she was one for me too. I liked Genesis when it came on the radio, gave the album a listen and was a bit ‘meh’

Then Realiti got me buzzed for Art Angels, loved Art Angels from the get go and went back to Visions and thought “how could I have thought this wasn’t good?”

i’m the opposite really, i haven’t really gotten into anything from The Seer onwards cos it’s too fucking long and therefore a chore to listen to. i like reasonably long songs but 2 hour albums are just taking the piss. listened to The Seer once, sounded decent, never listened again. saw them touring it, they mainly played new stuff that would end up on To Be Kind, sounded decent, never listened to it.

i really like My Father Will Guide me, though. solid and approachable album, though it seems the least popular of the reunion ones which is a shame.

only listened to 2 of the earlier ones so far, White Light and Holy Money which are both pretty great. the latter proves they can pack a good album into just over half an hour if they stop fucking about.
