I’m not sure why but I’d assumed Mandy, Indiana sounded similar to the post-punk stuff that came out of South London. But, they don’t really and are much more experimental.
Who sounded differently from what you expected?

Remember hearing destroyer were very good and expecting some sludge metal
Used to think Kevin Morby would be more of a hipster Alex Cameron type of artist. I think it was the Oh My God artwork of him with his top off. Was surprised when he kept coming up in my recommended artists under ‘Because you like Bill Callahan’ but then listened to him and discovered why.
I thought Let’s Eat Grandma were going to be a Midwest Emo band based off the name because those bands usually have names that make you roll your eyes.
Scullcrusher
Would have been preferable tbf
I had the same thing with …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
Definitely expected Rancid to be some sort of extreme black metal
Probably the most recent example for me, hadn’t heard them until a recent Music League round.
Assumed I knew what Jon Spencer Blues Explosion was going to sound like, then I heard Bellbottoms
Chat Pile because of the logo
Dean Blunt’s ‘Black Metal’ album was not as advertised
I’d somehow gotten it into my head that These Arms Are Snakes were a third tier Hot Topic emo type band. Found out through music league that I couldn’t have been more wrong. What a furious, crushing, riff-packed, perfect discography.
One of the very few best bands of the century so far.
Assumed My Bloody Valentine were an emo band
The Legendary Pink Dots, sort of expected something that would sound at home on a Fallout soundtrack
Mandy, Indiana was the first that came to mind, but because I presumed they’d be a wooly pitchfork indie rock band based in Brooklyn rather than an industrial band from Manchester from the name
Thought The 1975 were gonna be 2007 landfill indie revivalists, basically Pigeon Detectives.
Goa Express. Thought they might incorporate an Indian influence or at least be a bit interesting and psychedelic. Nothing of the sort.
…are they not?
Live Skull doesn’t really deliver on the name, although a really great band. Should have sold the name to a new wave of British heavy metal band, and called themselves something more clangy.
nah they went quite glitch-pop at times over the last few albums
