Artists who've had it, lost it, then found it again

The Fall never had it to begin with. They are literally the only band to never have anything. They were brilliant.

yeah I don’t think The Fall ever lost sight of what they were in the way that, say, Simple Minds or PIL did despite releasing a fair few substandard albums. Those latter bands totally forgot what they were all about.

I’m not really a Suede fan but I absolutely agree with this.

Slipknot. Nailed it with slipknot and iowa, pretty shite from then on. Superb return to form with WANYK. Probably will now have another decade or so in the wilderness and come back with an absolute banger.

Iowa was so good. I remember when it came out there was a multiple page kerrang piece on it where they interviewed Corey, joey and a few others about what it was like to record the album. A few of them talked about when they recorded the title track (15 min slow burner). Apparently they all stripped naked bar the masks, lit hundreds of candles and poured hot wax over each other a la Ricky Martin

It’s …interesting but there’s at least a dozen other NY LPs that are better imo

Black Sabbath maybe? The first six albums are obviously amongst the greatest works of genius in the history of recorded music, then they released a lot of really rubbish records. The comeback album 13 is not exactly an earthshaking classic but it’s pretty decent.

Even if he hadn’t had Blackstar, the likes of Reality and Heathen were a relative return to form after some absolute turkeys across the 80s and 90s

If anything, I would say they’ve only got better with each album. Canada Songs is scrappy but shows promise. S /T is a great example of how a heavy, experimental band can add some melody while still keeping what makes them interesting in the first place. The First Supper especially is awesome.

The only one for me which stands up to their earlier stuff is Journal for Plague Lovers, but then again angsty-punk Manics is my favourite Manics. I’ve heard some people saying Futurology is as good as their early stuff.

They’ve definitely released some stinkers.

I’d say ‘Outside.1’ from '94 meets the criteria. Up there with some his 70’s work for me.

still some good stuff on those records but scott walker comparatively lost it in the 70s

Yeah fair I really like Canada Songs and that sort of music so felt it was a bit of a step down

Thought Valtari was great tbh

If you strip away all of the little conceptual linking pieces and trim two or three of the weaker songs there is an absolutely superb 50 minute album slightly hidden in Outside. No way should it be 75 minutes long.

Agree, tbh I can’t remember the last time I listened to the entire thing. He does throw an awful lot at the wall but there’s 10 or 11 tracks that really stick (a few relatively unknown classics amongst them) and his voice has rarely been better.

I just realised that sing was released before the ine avacardo posted

That album sold super well iirc, it was always playing in HMV when I went there, I’m not a fan

I will admit to having picked several post-2018 songs from both FOB and P!ATD for my Now That’s What Sully Calls Music compilations. Quite cheerfully actually, as on Now! Sully 100 I also picked George Ezra - Shotgun
