Not attempting a pile on here at all but I’d put Minecraft ahead of Taylor Swift in terms of cultural ubiquity. Totally get not having played it but not having heard of it… ![]()
Guess my argument would be that if you’re not interested in whole areas of popular culture you’d probably only hear about things within that field either a) via the news, or b) if there had been a huge crossover thing like a film or series. Would Minecraft have ever been in the news? Have I missed a huge Hollywood film about it, idk?
I use my mum, who has never had any interest in pop culture in the slightest, as a yardstick for this. I reckon she’d know who Taylor Swift is, while not having heard any of her music, but I’d wager she’d think Minecraft was a subscription hobby magazine or something.
It’s close though, and any reasonably normal person should have heard of it
Will largely depends on if they come into contact with small children I think. My mum knows all about Minecraft but she works doing child sitting.
I only know of Minecraft because of a stoner mate from a decade ago who used to build. I’m sure I’ve seen the name and brand elsewhere but it’s easy to avoid certain parts of contemporary culture if you’re not interested nor looking.
Think it’s possible to totally not have heard of Minecraft but also I think it’s quite funny this has happened on the same day as this (re the Smiths)
Ultimately whatever bluster we come up with, we’re all just after those sweet sweet indie points
I’ve been playing Minecraft since 2010 but then gaming is a pretty consistent part of my cultural knowledge base and friendship circles. Don’t think you need to have lived under a rock to have never heard of it but it’s a pretty impressive achievement in this day and age given media/consumer saturation. C418 is definitely a huge part of its success.
We’ll hear from bugduv after his Runescape sesh
They are making a massive Hollywood film about it tbf
Creed somehow have 10.6 million monthly Spotify listeners in the year of our lord 2024
They’re a meme now, though.
btw remember Strawberry Guy, the former Orielles keyboardist mentioned upthread who had quietly reached 3.9M listeners by the start of 2023?
Now on 8.5M listeners ![]()
That’s more than three times as many listeners as 63,000 capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium headlining band Catfish and the Bottlemen, for context.
On Melodic isn’t he?
Looks like he blew up on Tiktok (which is normally the answer tbh)
!!!
Where exactly are all these Catfish and the Bottlemen fans? Has anyone ever encountered one in the wild?
Perhaps not surprising, but I’ve been watching Being Dead’s Spotify numbers go from about 30K/month to currently 95K since their Pitchfork BNM less than a week ago. Or maybe they’re in some popular TikTok video ![]()
