Artists you banked on to do something special, but they didn't

A Health song just came up on shuffle from Death Magic and I remember how much potential I thought they had. The combination of the wild first two albums and the beautifully curated DISCO remix albums just made me think that here were a band who were playing puppet masters with genre, deciding what to unleash when.

But then… Everything since Death Magic has been a slight variation of that formula with almost no other imagination or interest in evolving their style. The vocalist has three vocal lines FFS.

What other artists have made you think they were going to be exciting only to fail to meet your expectations?

Muse is another great one.

Saw them live twice as a support act before they’d released their debut EP and in both gigs they blew the headliners away. I remember interviews where Matt Bellamy was so pretentious about their potential and I genuinely thought they would become this hybrid of the best bits of Radiohead and Jeff Buckley but instead… They became Muse.

I always thought Death Grips were gonna surprise us with something more than their whole vibe too. Feels weird to think that The Money Store is their “best” album now in 2024.

I even thought Keane might be an interesting band at one point

Bloc Party, who I thought would be The Next Radiohead in some way.

But then they hired Jacknife Lee for their second album, which was much more The Next Snow Patrol.

JJ72’s first album is so great and that voice is really something. Then their second was just ignored

Genuinely think their second album is pretty decent

Ignored because it was underrated or ignored because it was shit? This thread is for the bands who had potential but squandered it, not for ones who were underrated.

Yet I will never know

Mate, they clearly didn’t live up to potential but this

For an album that contains On and Where is Home

Was convinced Courtney Barnett was the next Dylan at one point and then she changed everything I liked about her
