August 2019 Politics Thread - Recess!

Yeah there’s definitely issues with FALC not least his weirdly whiggish run-down of technological progress, it works better as a provocation rather than an actual political program.

I can see that. At root, I think technology will have a vital part to play in our emancipation though. We have to decouple human value from the traditional productivity of labour. But saying shit like “Infinity pools for all!” is a bit weird.

Rise in EU citizens not getting UK settled status causes alarm

Proportion being granted pre-settled status – with fewer rights – has risen to 42%

totally unsurprising

meanwhile;

Don’t worry. Boris Johnson said this wasn’t going to happen.

Hope it works out for you

Eh?

I’ve got a full-time fixed contract at a Human Rights org, earning over 30k, married to a Swede, 2 Swedish kids, homeowner, lived here for 15years etc. I reckon I’ll be fine. The worst it’ll be for me is about €200 to get dual citizenship.

a fuckton of folks around the EU will definitely not be alright though - I’ll never get over 17.6million people voting for diminished freedoms for themselves & everyone else

Yeah this is spot on. Like some of the people on twitter that contribute to it, but feel like you need extremely online brainworms to get their (apparently hilarious) injokes and references. Like being sat in earshot of an unbearable table of people in a sixth form common room.

“I don’t like going abroad, so why should anyone else?” is usually the answer

Didn’t help that the main people running the Remain campaign (i.e. David Cameron and co) didn’t much like these aspects of the EU (‘freedom of movement is obvously bad but vote to stay in the EU guys!’) so didn’t bother talking about them, and nor did the media

I’ve made the analogy on here before but it was like straight people voting to outlaw homosexuality

I like big etc

Lyndon B. Johnson:

“I’ll tell you what’s at the bottom of it,” he said. “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

This isn’t remotely similar to that FFS.

This propaganda was always happening…yes, it’s being done differently but whatever the means there were always people at the top and from other governments exploiting it.

Sounds similar to these ears

algorithmically tuned propaganda streamed into your household, into your pocket, 24/7 is as far from tuning the wireless in to a Churchill speech as h-bombs were from cannons & muskets

you can call the first one propaganda and the second one war - doesn’t mean they are at all materially comparable
